Default anyone race a turbo integra?

Hey folks, wasn't sure where to put this, I know they are trying to cut down on bench racing in the street racing forum... but I didn't know if there would be a problem doing it somewhere else.

My best buddy from high school has a 98 Acura Integra GSR 5 speed coupe with the 170 hp VTEC four. Now obviously this thing poses no threat stock, it runs about a 15 flat from the factory. I haven't raced it yet and I have no fear of it as of right now, it only has a fart can and a cheap Ebay intake, but his future plans call for a Greddy T3/T4 hybrid turbo at 6 psi along with a tune, and that does worry me a little because I understand those cars can go into the low 13's with that setup. He probably still wouldn't be much of a threat in the 1/4 except our local dragstrip is a 1/8 mile, and if I don't get traction off the line he might have me. Has anyone raced that car or something similar with that setup? (Same thing as a 99-00 Civic SI)

What would be the best modding strategy (bearing in mind I'm on kind of a budget) to make fairly certain I can't lose? Emphasis would be more on off the line power/traction rather than top end because we'd be running 1/8 rather than 1/4. Stall? DR's? Or would even just a lid and catback along with decent street tires be enough?

Large Stall and some sticky tires to hold you and that car won't even be close. His turbo is going to take a little while to spool up, the 1/8 mile will be to your advantage.

He's wrong wheel drive so no matter how much power he's making he's not going to be able to use it in an 1/8th mile race. Some slicks may make it closer but with only 6 PSI it's not going to be hell for strong or anything like that. I've seen some fast ones. There are about a dozen that hit our local 1/8th mile track and with slicks in the front, they're nasty. They've got a whole lot more thrown at them that just a 6 PSI turbo kit though.

For future information, 99% of all younger Honda/Acura owners "future mods" call for a turbo kit, yet only 1% gets one. If your friend has invested less than $100 in mods on his car now, I highly doubt he will invest $1500+ on a decent turbo setup. If he did run 6psi on a t3/t4, he would run anywhere in the 13s in the 1/4.

ive raced like 3 of those cars around here...most cant launch for the life of them...so in the 1/8th u wouldnt have to worry to bad .. all i had when i was racing them was a lid and catback...so if u at least have that ull be set...

Some can be pretty fast, but yeah 6 psi isnt a lot and he needs to run that to keep from blowing the motor. I think with just drag radials you should be able to take him.

He will want to run from a roll, for one. Another thing, at 6 psi, he isnt gonna be anything wonderous as stated above. And, like someone pointed out, my future mods include a forged 408, a full Maximum Motorsport suspension, Mystichrome paint, and a glass body on my 5.0....but is anyone scared...i doubt it....thats another lifetime away

He wont have more power than you up top. Most he will get from 6 psi is about 250WHP and thats pretty generous. You have the traction and likel the launch even with his light weight.

Just get a shot and decent tires. Stall is a good idea too.

As for the future mods thing, true. But smart guys wont bother putting much into the car untill they do the turbo. That knock-off ebay intake is probably a cheapo because he knows he will replace it when he gets the turbo anyway. Same for exsaust stuff. So who knows. I wouldnt wory though, unless he is going to build the fuel system to run more boost.

250 whp in a 2800# car w/driver (which is what a teggy w/driver weighs as i recall, or close... VS a 310 (or so) whp car that weighs 3600# w/driver....hrmmmm.....I wouldnt be so smug...

Him 11.2 # per whp Assuming the above.
You 11.61# per whp Assuming the above.

Well I'm in before my OWN lock - Unit I'm sorry I know there is no bench racing in here THAT'S WHY I originally had this in another forum to respect your wishes, and somebody moved it here.

Anyways thanks to everyone who had a useful reply, yes I know 99% of kids who have Honda/Acura cars don't ever actually GET their turbo but in this case my friend might actually be the 1%, and we are all paying for it because he's a spoiled lazy unemployed louse who lives with his dad paying no rent using all his unemployment $$ on beer and mods So he can afford it, and he and his dad are both very mechanical so he can install it himself...

I'm thinkin' some good street tires, a lid and CB, and I should be fine.

Is an 1/8th a race? Anway, I ran into a Turbo Acura last fall. He started messing with me just because I passed him. He probably thought I was a supercharged 4 banger @ best. He's probably still scratching his head wondering how that little Miata slapped him silly.

From a stop, you will probably win. On the freeway, probably not. Modify your torque converter is my suggestion.

A GS-R will only see 250whp with a greddy kit at 10psi+ which will require a fuel pump upgrade and a decent exhaust. At 6psi it should be about 200whp and 180 ft. lbs. Plus the integra is wrong wheel drive with an open diff, these things launch terrible when torque is introduced.

I know, and it might be possible for it to have 250whp with full bolt ons and some head work. Also, stevespewterZ, I don't know if your friend misled you saying stock GS-R's run a 15 flat stock, but that only happens in ricer fantasy land and on the internet. A 15 flat is a decent Type R time, and GS-R's run mid-high 15's. Also, if this kid has got money to burn, how did he end up with a $15 ebay intake and $30 fartcan? Is he really ready to spend thousands on a turbo kit?

Ugh, I can't believe I got tricked into writing more about a stock/detuned integra with the "he is the 1% that will get a turbo kit" phrase. To sum it all up, if he hits VTEC and can speed shift then you will get smoked, even if he's N/A with two fat chicks in the back seat and an empty NOS bottle in the front seat waiting to get installed, but that is just there for safe keeping, not to show off or brag about when he will get the bottle filled even though the bottle is the only part his "kit" contains, he will smoke you.
