Z28 and 16g WRX
My friend and I have been trying to set up a race for a long time, and everytime we had got together it would rain. Last night we finally got our chance. He owns a 05 WRX and put on a 16g turbo, sti intercooler, BOV wastegate, blah blah blah. He told me 285 at the wheels. We take them out and get 2 runs.
First from a 1st gear roll. I spin 1st and 2nd pretty bad, but still pull ahead about a fender. I go to shift into 3rd and he pulls out about a fender. He goes to 4th and I go out by about a fender. I hit 4th and we are dead *** even, at about 110 i start to pull ahead by a very SMALL amount.
Next run is from a 2nd gear roll. We're dead even through second again, he goes to third and I jump about a fender. I go to third and he pulls a fender. He goes to 4th and I pull out by a fender. I shift to 4th and he pulls up dead even with me. We go up to about 120 again and we are dead even the whole way.

I would like to a do a cam or maybe even heads and cam, so i was gonna wait on the tune. But, some places do cheap or even free re-tunes, so i'll look into that when the time comes. I thought at best it would be as fast as an STi, that thing pulled pretty hard. Of course after he tells me he ran trapped at 107.

Nice runs. Turbo upgrade is tempting for me, though I think I won't be going there.

Having said that, LTs remove a huge damn bottleneck in these cars, and are helpfull all around.
I predict another good race, but not a slaughter by either part by a long shot. Now with nitrous......
Edit: Are you sure on the wastegate? 16Gs come with an internal gate and I cant recall ever seeing one with an external gate. Not that its a bad idea, its just very rare. If he has an external gate he might be messing with you and running a larger turbo. You should be able to see the letters/numbers "TD05" on it on the compressor housing.

Now that you say that I do recall him saying internal gate.

OK, then yeah its a 16G. He might have been talking about some mild portwork in the wastegate passage of the 16G. A very good idea actually. 16Gs are kinda cool in that they tend to hit the boost your setting for very quickly, then "creep" to a higher boost level in the upper revs. It can blow up a car if you dont tune for it or eliminate it though. I ported my Evo III 16G and it still creeps just a bit on my 2.4L.
16Gs are very good all around turbos. They can get people into the 300-350WHP range pretty easaly and reliably. The meanest dyno I have seen for one was just shy of 420WHP on an AWD and it was all the turbo had period. Thats a lot of power, but its nothing huge by todays standards.
Your average cammed car with full bolt ons will out power one pretty handily. In his state, you have a very very cool competition on your hands. Always fun to acheive similar goals in totaly different ways.
Then again, being a full second faster, I dont think your exactly dead even just now LOL.
