STOCK FOR STOCK...LT1 vs 97-98 Cobra
Who would win? Having a friendly debate with Ben (HOSS) and I think that it'd at the least be a drivers race, but I think the Cobra would beat, not badly, but beat a LT1, then with gears, walk to LT1. Ben says the LT1 would pull on the Cobra...

this is not meant to be a dis to LT1 guys...i'm just curious...
edit: sorry for posting this but neither of us have a Cobra nor LT1, so we can't get the facts first hand, and I've used the search, and can't find much...so if you have to delete this, so be it. thank you.

Depends on what years and if the LT1 is an M6 or A4. The 96-97 Cobras were somewhat slow without mods. The 98 Cobra model got a new tune that ran way better than the previous models. I know the first year LT1 was speed density as opposed to the later models that got MAF and more power.
Just to give you a scenario I had a 1996 SS Camaro A4 and I raced my friends 1997 cobra and I would beat him by 2 cars. We were both stock. He started learning how to drive and eventually would end up beating me by 2 cars.

The 98 Cobra is a little faster than the 97. Although, it really doesn't matter. It's a drivers race. If the LT1 was an M6, i say the LT1 would edge the win out. The 97-98 Cobra's are really no faster than the 99-04 GT's. Both cars are going to run about the same time in the quarter, but i think the LT1 would trap higher. I give it to the LT1...I don't see the cobra trapping over 100MPH and stock LT1 M6's have seen around 101-103...(I have witnessed)
An A4 LT1 Vs a 98 cobra would be a hell of quarter mile race though. Out of 10 times, i think the LT1 would win more. With good tires you could see consistent 13.9's.

Well I own both and my Cobra has trapped bone stock 101 MPH several times with a shitty DA. I bet if I were to run it this month, It would trap a MPH or 2 higher. From my experience driving both, it is a drivers race. Down low my 97 M6 has more torque and pulls harder off the line. The Cobra lacks a lot of low end but really pulls nicely at higher RPMs. And NO 98s are not faster than 96 or 97s. Plus the 96-98 Cobras trap higher in the 1/4 than 99-04 GTs.

Overall the cobra had less body roll in the road section but the SS was easier to drive on the 1/4 BUT it started to overheat after the 6th run so they set it aside for awhile.
the overall winner was the cobra but as was posted they said its a drivers race and 100% stock vs stock the SS wins

It really is a huge debate whether or not a 98 cobra is faster than 99-04 GT's. Im not positive on the 98 cobra being faster, but i thought they rated them higher. That could be like the 96-97 LT1's having 10 more HP though...
I've always assumed the 98 Cobra's were faster than the 99-04 GT's since they are rated at 300hp. But, i have seen many races and have been in my friends 99 GT when he has beat 96-98ish stock Cobra's. I know that doesn't make a difference, because it was a drivers race, but i didn't see anyone driving bad...
Also, i've heard from some Ford guys that 99 Cobra's are slower than 98's. (This is assuming the 99 has the *Fix*) I guess they had a problem that year. That doesn't make much sense to me either. The 99 should be faster. I have seen two of them race also. That was a damn good race. 99 Cobra got him by a car. Although, the 98 was modded with headers and the 99 only had a catback...

Drivers race, although Lt1's seem to show up some odd numbers, one min you here of 13.6's STOCK good enough to rival a 2.73 LS1.
But then you'll see a host of LT1's lagging in the mid 14's.
I would have to say I've seen better times for a stock LT1, but more consistant good times from 96-98 Cobra's.

I used to work at brothers performance back when they had a dyno, and from experience the 1998 cobras with minor bolt ons would always dyno more than the older models. They would dyno close the newer MACH1's power level. The 1996-1997 models would dyno right around what the 1999-2004 GT's were doing.

Now for the Mythbuster.....
96-98 cobras made the same power. 98 had a different tune which required different software to tune it. A tuner had to purchase the 96-97 software separate from the 98. It (the 98's) had more tuning parameters to fine tune the fuel trims, timing tables, etc. Kinda like comparing the 93 ECC (A9L) vs the shitbox of an ECC in the 94-95 mustangs. But between all 3 yrs they all dynoed generally about the same with a few freaks here and there. But they never dynoed the same as a 99-04 2v's. 305 vs 260 fwhp is quite a difference. -Mark
