Default Killed a cop.....in a Mustang

Friday night plans to head to the Rock for some test and tune. My colleague has his freshly restored/re-engineered '71 Mustang and wants to run it. '94 roller 351 with pro-topline heads, 3.91 geared 9" with a C-4.

He was following me and got seperated in traffic. Two head lights get real close behind me and then whip to the right lane for a fast pass. 99 or 00 GT/ bright green with exhaust and chrome rims. He punches it a couple of times but I'm not biting with traffic and me waiting for '71 to get clear. When '71 is behind me and the road opens up I set the cruise and GT falls back behind us, and invariably tries showing off again a few miles down the road. I still don't bite. Judging by the lack of show, in the show off this thing is pretty stock and a waste of gas. He turns off half way to the track.

At the track, we check out the street tuners, eat and then get in line. Poorly run lanes mean slow throughput. A c5 Z06 is battling it out with a turbo golf. The golf is winning with high 12's to the c5's low and inconsistent 13's. Then Green GT shows. He approaches me to ask where he needs to go to get his #'s. Newbie. He pulls next to my car as we are waiting for the first pass. We get paired off and he asks "you the guy coming down here earlier" as we are about the pull into the water box. I shrug and prep to stage. '71 makes his first run with the c4 shifting, 14.6 @100.2 mph. I line up with GT and take a slow R/T with a mild launch to see how things are. He is 2 lengths back by the 60 foot and several buses by the 1/8th. I pull back in line and check out '71 ticket and we make some plans to change his strategy. GT starts talking to us and turns out he is a cop. Turns out he is aquainted with several of our friends and a very good friend of mine. Also turns out he knows nothing about drag racing or cars. "I messed up my launch" he says as his girlfriend walks up behind him. He stopped to pick her up. She probably could have done better.

We rag on him about his hypocrisy and his poor driving ability. And then give him some pointers. A lot. Probably too many. We are set to go against each other again but some broken ricer shifts the lanes and Gt is behind me against a SRT4. I catch the skittle ahead of him by a bus while on the Return Road. He shows me his ticket with a 14.5 @ 99 mph. He wants to know why he got beat by a neon. I suggest he worry about his own numbers. '71 ran a 14.1 @ 103.8 mph.

'71 and I are old friend and bitter rivals. We line up next. GT is history. A sentra spews internals in my lane right before we go. Tom and I move out of the way of the cleaning crew and tow truck as we listen to music and chat about how bad we are going to whip each other's @$$ in the long awaited race. Tom is a ford-natic. I love fast cars. Mustang LX and LS1 are to my liking. We line up. R/t could mean bragging right on this one. We stage and launch. More accurately Tom launches and I wheel hop badly. The my best guess is that one tire went through the water box or picked up some fluid on the line. I work past the wheel hop and catch 2nd hard and get some more wheel hop. I can see '71 out of the corner of my eye. I'm running it up to the rev limiter and then shifting. 3rd gear, I look over and it appears we are neck and neck. Tom hasn't drag raced much and I was the first person to take him to the track and teach him. I'm proud of the guy.

We cross the line too close for me to tell who won. We pick up our tickets and head back to the line. We get out and stare in amazement. Tom has a 13.9 @ 104.4 with a 2.3 60' and a .28 RT. I have a .29 RT 2.4-60 foot, and a 13.7 @107.5 with the win going to me by a hair. My worst time of the night but I beat him.

My next run is a 13.2 @108.3 with nobody I know. Tom is smiling when I return my suggestion to move his shift points up has given him a 13.4 at 105. He is extremely proud.

GT is now where around.

At least the cop admitted he sucked at driving.

Great tiems on that 71.

Sounds like some fun runs. For some reason I expected the '71 to be faster.

Tom had it dynoed after the engine was broken in. I can't remember the numbers but he definitely needs to shift higher. This car is very nice and he has come a long way. Our first trip to the Rock back in 04 resulted in a 16.9 ET with the E brake partially on in his 4.6 convertible. He managed one 14.9 pass before leaving and this was his first trip back since. The '71 will take some work but he is running on modern radials that are period size for '71. The post would have been about us racing but the cop made it more fun.

Will provide updates on Tom's improvements and some pics of his ride. Non-fast back but it looks pretty good.

My first time experiencing it too. This run was following the rice that broke down. The track crew was cleaning up my lane too. I believe some water from the water box or oil or some combination there of got on one tire causing the spin and grab, spin and grab. Only a theory but didn't happen on the last run or ever before.

Very entertaining, even though you dogged out the cop. Hopefully he's cool if and when you end up getting stopped by him down the road. I know some of the guys in my line of work sit back and wait for the payback. If he's a punk then he'll be doing that, so watch your *** if he's a cop in your area because he's waiting for ya.
