Default Difference auto vs manual?

Hey guys I want to get a GTO but I am wondering is there a huge difference in power because I want an auto vs manual? I mean if there is a difference where I'll get smoked racing with the auto then I might as well get an manual. I just want to make sure the auto is still fast!

I can only tell you my experience. I had a 2002 WS6 A4 for 4 years yea it was fast off the line and everything uses mor gas. A year later I bought a 2000 Regular Trans Am M6 speed and what a diffrence. You feel the torque in the seat like never before. Nothing against autos I had 2 of them in diffrent WS6's, but the manuel 1 better gas mileage. 2 feel the power and 3 more fun in my opinion.

Yes but I drive alot in traffic, I hate the fact that you can't eat with one hand and drive . But if the power difference is not noticeable on the GTO I will pick up an auto. Just wondering if there is any auto gto owner out there?

Get a stalled auto. It will completely change the feel of the car.

auto's with a stock converter are not living up to their full potential... but stalled autos on the other hand are just plain nasty....

ive heard that it takes about 30 more horsepower for the manual to keep up with an automatic, dont know if its true though.

Get the auto, it's what you want and you'll be happy with it. I went with the M6 but mine is a garage queen. If it was a DD I would have went with the A4, rowing gears gets old in traffic real quick. But it will take a big stall to hang with an m6 up top.

Get the auto with a 3000+ stall and thank us later.

If you are debating it this badly, go with the auto. Manuals aren't for everyone all the time. A stall converter, gears, and shift upgrade will make a huge difference, put your performance back near an M6 and still save your clutch leg. If by not using it you consider "saving".

No offence, but you seem to be too concerned about being able to eat while you're driving and that tells me that "fun" factor that you get driving manual is not as important to you. Auto's are more consistent and are easier to launch, race, or do whatever since all you have to do is mash the gas pedal. Getting good at driving high performance car with manual transmission will take some time and dedication. Some people never get as good as other at driving manual, but once when you do learn and become really good at it, car with manual transmission has some advantages over auto.
1. Better gas milage
2. You don't have to worry about transmission not downshifting when you need it to.
3. You choose the noise level your car makes
4. Make more power than auto (less drivetrain loss)
5. Most important... IT'S A LOT OF FUN! You get the feeling of driving the car instead of the car driving you because you have more control.

Bad things with manual transmission are:
1. You have to get good at driving manual
2. Clutches start going pretty fast if you start modding your car
3. Harder to launch
4. Modified cars with manual transmission and sticky tires tend to break rear end faster than cars with auto transmissions
5. It can get a little annoying in traffic

Look around the forums, read more stuff, maybe even drive auto and manual so you can compare and then make your decision.

Good luck

If you get an auto and put a converter in it you lose horsepower on the dyno. But not necessarly on the track. You have to get all that power to the ground.

Ya, auto+stall=roasted street tires...you need a stall and some good D/R's, Nittos preferably for a DD
