Default 99 Head/CAM T/A vs 2004 Big turbo SRT-4

So one of my friends just bought an 04 SRT-4 with some MAJOR mods done to it. Of course I’m the first one he wanted to race in it. The mods from what I know are pretty MAJOR consisting of 8:5 wiesco pistons, crower rods, head work, cam, and all the bolt ons and a 75 shot of nitrous. The turbo is a gt35r which is a monster turbo for that car. He wanted to race me on low boost setting on the car which was 16-17 psi so I figured I’d probably get him on low boost. High boost setting is 28 psi. I know the car from time slips and videos has gone an 11.2 @ 136 MPH blowing off the slicks. So we set the race up him on low boost and no nitrous me on motor.

First race 40 roll – He decided he wanted to go from a 40 roll so he wouldn’t blow the tires of (He had MH drag radials on the car though) So at 40 mph I was sitting at about 4300 RPMS or so and he honks 3 times. I get an instant jump on him by maybe a half car even though he was brake boosting. I pull out a little bit on him and then hit 3rd gear I’m still sitting right in front of him by maybe 2 cars or so. I shift to 4th gear and look back and he is pulling up on me and passes me at about 115 mph or so. Damn that thing is fast! I talk to him after the race and he says he missed 3rd gear… I was like there is no way…

2nd Race 25 roll – I didn’t believe when he said he missed 3rd so I said if your car is that fast lets go from a lower roll to see how it ends up. So we kick em off from 25 on 3 honks and I pull about a 1 – 1 ½ cars on him instantly. I hit 2nd gear with a nice powershift and look back it looks like about 2 cars or so with a slow pull. Then I slam 3rd gear a lookup and seems like he is reeling me in slowly but I can tell he is coming. I smash 4th gear and soon after I hear the big turbo coming for me. He pulls me by about a car at 105 or so then I shut down.

3rd Race DIG – He said he wanted to try a dig with me so of course I agree. Of course it is cold outside and winter time so I have on regular street tires Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3’s. He has on MH drag radials which are a pretty rowdy tire. So we go and kick em from a dig. My buddy flags us and I’m sitting at about 3200 ready to slip the clutch. Hands drop and I hit it. Start swinging sideways a bit and spinning pretty bad.. wasn’t used to launching on street tires with 20 degree weather. But I pull the srt about a car or so out of the hole and slow pull it for about 2 cars through 1st gear. I hit 2nd and seem to be still pulling away slowly but not much. I hit 3rd gear and it looks like he is about to come trucking by me but I hold him off in 3rd by about 1 ½ cars or so. So finally hit 4th and my pull starts to stop and he ends up passing me at about 115 or so. So it ended up 1/8th I win 1/4th close but I think I won.

Overall I was impressed with the car and want to see what it can do at 28 psi with spray, it should be NASTY. He wants to try it again when it’s warmer and I put the tires back on with the bottle in. I told him I wasn’t going to spray my car without my Nittos on because of traction. So we’ll have a rematch soon which sounds like he’ll pull me by that MPH the previous owner was getting in the 1/4th. 1/8th mile from a dig should be fun if he hooks up cause I know I can. I didn’t think he would pull me that hard on 15 psi cause a 400 rwhp T/A isn’t a small threat to most cars. Have any of you ran into any major modded srt’s?

Damn, that SRT sounds sick. Your TA isn't bad either lol. I personally have never seen one with that much power. The majority in my area are sittin around 300 whp, maybe a littile more. But they are on the stock turbos too.

My buddy has a GT35r... those things do haul ***.

28 psi is the max for him? My buddies boosts up to 37psi about. But he has a stock ported head. Just bigger valves... dynoed 390whp on 22psi only pulling to 6200rpms.

Yeah 16psi for a gt35r isn't even in the turbos efficiency range yet. He should be able to get 30+psi out of that turbo.

The N20 is less of a power adder like on an lsx and more to help spool a large turbo on a small motor. The real power is from the turbo. The n20 is to help it move.

In any case you friend sounds like he's got on hell of a highway monster.

Yah he was on low boost setting. I had no chance on motor him at 28 psi lol.

Nitrous is primarily for the turbo, but its also does some other things. For one thing, its a lo like makine the IC tons more efficient, with any additional pressure drop. Huge power adder there. For another, it has the same effect as in an NA application of simply feeding the car so,me more 02.

A 50 shot on an LS1 is worth a bit more than 50HP. A 50 shot on a hi-po turbo car is worth a LOT more than 50hp quite independent of the spoolup help. If I ever use Juice, you can bet it will not shut off when I hit full boost

I hate to tell you that you probably wont have any chance even if you sprayed and he was boosting 30 psi.

I owned a SRT4 with just a little .50 trim and a few supporting mods and it made 375 to the wheels on 21 psi. It pulled a C6 pretty bad and a 2002 Heads and Cam T/A that made 420 to the ground. Those cars can be downright nasty with not much money.

Yes they can be nasty my buddy just sold his ...not sure of his mods but it ran 11.1@130 mph and put down 500fwhp.

they can get a little crazy, i race one around here, STG 2 with a 50 shot and all the supporting mods, and i pulled him pretty bad, but im no way a lightly modded LS1

This is what I love about STR-4's. The FWD is killing them at the track. Put that trap speed on a LS1 car that's setup to drag and it's running closer to 10.1 in the quarter mile.

I've seen quite a few run at my local track but I think they are all on the stock turbo. Only one I saw was in the 12's and the others were in the 13's or 14's.

Good deaths. Sounds like you both have some nice setups there.

there are about 5 above the 400whp mark and one that has 550whp around me. they are nasty cars. from what ive seen, not the best at the track, but thats prolly driver error. the 550whp one, i think, got a best of 11.4. cant remember the mph. from a roll, they are ridiculous though.
