Mine was pretty bad, but not that bad. After I installed the Koni's, I sprayed about 10 coats of Rustoleum on it, let it dry and then sealed it off from the environments.

Looks alot like mine did, except mine didn't have a point on top. I was surprised mine was still on the car. Packed mine with grease when installing all new stuff.

Yep, it's too bad that design doesn't lend itself to easily draining moisture. Once water gets in, it's only a matter of time before it's ruined there.

The only thing I remember what prevent excess moisture from damaging the piston rod attachment threading and the respective fastening was a liberal amount of synthetic, non-petroleum based marine grease, but eventually there still would be some rust (just not as bad as the example above).

reminds me of my old v6 camaro when I changed the shocks on that. car had 100K drivn in the winter through the salted roads and all I took the strut assembly off, compressed the spring. All it took was one hit with a cold chisel and hammer and the "bolt" (at least what I think was the bolt) came right off and the assembly came loose. What was scary about that though was wondering what would have happened if what was left of the bolt would failed before I compressed the spring.

Most of them look like that, makes it tuff to get the nut off too

Like the man said, gob of grease will help for next time.

I also sealed up everything with silicone sealant under and on top.

Good Luck or dont drive in the rain

Yup like others said if you drive the car in the rain / snow it will end up like that because of the moisture that can't escape.

If your going to reuse that strut mount just clean / scrub / shave off all the nasty crap and make sure you put a big gob of grease on the thread and nut.
