have you checked the hubs and tire rod ends?
Put the front end up in the air
Grab the tire in the 6 and 12 o'clock position and rock the wheel
If it moves, you may need new hubs.
If it does not move, the hubs are OK
Now grab the tire in the 3 and 9 O'clock position
If it rocks in and out then the tire rod ends may be bad.
If nothing moves, maybe it's the tires.

Following grooves in the road "generally" tends to be the tires themselves, not the alignment or the steering. Do you have a buddy that would let you borrow his fronts for a test run, say a known bad stretch of road?

Not necessary. Whenever my tie rod ends go bad, the car tends to follow the grooves alot more than normal because they no longer hold the assembly exactly streight. BTW, when they get real bad the car gets really darty under heavy braking.

I'm going with tires too. Mine are skipped in their wear pattern. I made a dumb mistake running a slightly skinnier tire up front and now I can't rotate it to get the wear evened out. Now the car just walks all over the place. What size are yours? Does the car have any other tendecies floaty, oversteer,etc...?

And FWIW my 96 TA seemed to handle and steer better than my '01 WS6. And I still cant figure out why.
