Default tie rod question

how much play is allowed before the tie rods (inner and outer) need to be changed? i got about just under 1in of play with both wheels off the ground and shaking at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock.

yea, the way i always go about checking my tie rods is that if i can turn them by hand to the left and to the right and there is a good amount of play, i would replace them. Especially since you say there is shaking in the steering wheel. Replace then(remember to count the threads currently on there) and then get a front end alignment and you should be good!

i think i got it. my uncle said i was checking it wrong. i originally shook the wheels with the steering wheel locked. he said do it with the steering wheel unlocked. so far there is no slack.

There is no spec for any vehicle for tie-rod play as far as i know. Any movement and that **** is toast.

I just moved mine at the 9 and 3 0'clock on the tires and the whole tire and wheel moves a little kinda of rocks back and forth. One side makes a clicking noise when doing so. I just had my rack and pinion and outer tie rod ends replaced.
