Default Manual rack and Tie Rods

Has any one found out a way to use the flaming river manual rack and get a set of tapered tie rod ends to work?

I don't particularly care for the way they tell you to drill the spindles and use aluminum bushings.

I'd prefer a real tie rod end.

Any help is appreciated as always.

Thanks,

~Jim~

Ok, well I guess I'm going to go on the hunt then for something that'll fit both the turn buckle and the spindle. Worst case scenario I can go and drill the spindle or use a favor and get a piece machined.

Personally I don't care for the design at all. A compression joint like that just has to much potential to go wrong or develop slop in the steering.

I'll keep this updated as I go through my journey.

Here is the latest chapter of the story. Baer brakes makes a tie rod set up called Baer tracker that fits our spindles and the Flamming river (BMR) rack connections perfectly.

But like everything else, there is a problem. Flamming river supplies a 4" turnbuckle with the rack. Baer supplies a 2" turnbuckle.

Thats a problem.

Next problem is that the thread on the rack side is 9/16 the thread on the rod end is 5/8. The baer tappered bolt requires a 5/8 bore in the rod end. So I went on the hunt for a 5/8 bore 9/16 thread rod end so that I could use the tapered bolt along with the Flamming river turnbuckle.

Thats a problem.

No such rod end is being produced. So now I'm back to the drawing board. I'm going to call Baer and see if they'll make me a longer turnbuckle on special order otherwise I'm going to design my own and have a machine shop cut me one.

I'll update when I figure something out.

Just to let you know you are not the only one that has this consideration.

I think a piece could be made on a lathe but I am not the guy to do it for sure.

Also, I noticed that with the bmr rack that the turnbuckle has an increased diameter and this can cause interference with the inside of the wheel.

you really need skinnies for this setup.

I'm shocked no one has developed this idea yet. Personaly I think it is the right way to go. It's just taking a lot longer to get there then I had expected.

I havent gotten a wheel on yet to check but where does the wheel make contact?

The O.D of that turnbuckle did not look that large to me. The baer turnbuckle was almost twice the size of the F.R.

I can get a picture. It is hitting the TB on the very very inside of the wheel where the lip is. A wheel that isn't as wide would def fix it.

The car in question has 2K Vette wheels with 245 45 17s on front.

It only occurs at ultra low speed and when the wheel is cranked to the max.

How many people with a manual rack would run full width tires though?

Me.

Well after 3 weeks of down time I finally got the problem fixed.

Baer trackers are no good so don't even waste your time with those.

I tracked down a threaded GM tapered bolt through a non-sponsor and had them turned down by a friend of a friend who works at a machine shop. The bolts come in 5/8 inch and they need to go down to 1/2 inch.

I looked at every possible way to get this problem fixed and this is the best and cheapest way.

While I was getting my bolts turned I talked to MADMAN and found out he has a whole kit (Rod, Rod end, and turnbuckles) that fit the BMR rack for
$150. That could have saved me a whole lot of time but I saved $100 at least.

For any one who is interested I spent $30 (which I thought was expensive) to have the bolts turned down and $10 per tapered rod. So $50 and you have (in my opinion) a much safer, stock style tie rod that works with the BMR rack.

I don't have pictures up yet but I can get them posted if any one is interested.

I'll try and get some up tomorrow.

I think it turned out pretty well. I'm so much happier with this result as compared to what came with the manual kit.

probably a good idea since after your drill your spindles out to 1/2 you aren't going back to stock type ball joints.

This one shows the tie rod assembly before it went into the spindle.

The car is not on the road yet but it will be 1 million times better then the suggested setup in my opinion.
