Default Cheepest rear shocks?

I have noticed that I have a rear shock going out (it seems to make noise from that wheel well every time I hit a bump, it makes a "clack" noise). The rear shocks are original 1998 WS6 shocks, and the car has 108,000 miles on it now, so there is little doubt they are due for replacement anyways. (By all means if anyone thinks the noise is cause by something else, let me know).

Anyways. The front shocks got replaced a couple years ago with some cheep ones I got from Advanced Auto. Some day I would like to take the car in a whole new direction with a nice set of drag shocks, but that time is not now.

What would be the best cheep shock to get, to hold me over until I am ready for something decent?

What kind of drag shocks do you want some day?

Comp.Eng. 3way adj. for the rear.

Ideally someday I would like to go with a set of top dollar QA1's. But again, thats down the road. I just need something cheep (but prefer new) right now.

I looked on Autozone's website last night, and saw some new cheepo's for $17.

AZ has Monroes for like $25. I would grab those if I was in a bind.

Autozone's website is not showing any Monroe shocks (at least not for the rear).

They have Bilstiens (which are nice, as I have had them before, but are out of the price I want to spend), and they have Gabriel shocks (the cheep ones).

They also have a set of performance Edelbrocks, but again, way more than I want to spend to get a quick cheep fix.

Next real question is; should I just replace the one bad side? Or should I really just replace both of the rears?

Clank noise sounds more like a loose LCA or PHB. The shock could also be loose as well, check all the bolts.

I just checked all the nuts, bolts, and connections on the LCA, PHB, shock, torque arm, caliper, and everything seems to still be solid.

The noise is definatly coming from outside the car (not inside). It is noticable only when I go over small (or large) bumps or inperfections in the road. It definatly sounds like it is coming from the drivers side wheel well area. Logically I thought the schock since it is so old. Could it still be something other than a bad shock?

Well, I can get brand new ones for $17. If you can sell them to me for less than $10 shipped (since they are used) I would consider it.

I would just get matching rears from Advanced Auto. Replace both sides with I'm guessing Monroes that you have on the front. AA always has coupons and rebates, so look for those to lower price even more.

Well it doesn't seem like you have the money right now to spend on drag shocks. But I'm getting some Bilstiens for mine this week.

I called QA1 about completely rebuilding my QA1 Hal 12-way adjustable firm/stiffness settings and adjustable ride hieght drag shocks. They cost $60.00 each to completely rebuild like new. So $240.00 total. I might be selling them in a couple weeks and if I do I'll be letting them go for a great deal.

x2, the Competition Engineering 3-way drag shocks are only $45 a piece. Summit has a version that sells for less than that yet.

I really don't care about performance what so ever right now. It's all about the budget currently. The cheeper the better, but still would like new ones.

I don't think its going to get much cheeper than $17 for a new set of shocks. My bigger concern is that replacing the shocks won't fix the noise, and if thats the case, I just wasted the money. At this point, I am still thinking the shocks are the most likely cause of the noise though.

Monroe and Gabriel are basically the same thing, I believe one bought the other at some point.

I'm running KYB GR2 shocks on my car, they were cheap but I don't think they were $17 cheap.

Picked up and installed the shocks. The old shocks looked used, but not destroyed. Not too bad for 108,000 miles worth. While I was installing them, I also oiled/lubed up my lower control arms because I haven't in a couple years.

I don't know if it was the new shocks, or the lubed lower control arms, but the noise is now gone, and I am a happy camper
