Question WTF is this clunking noise?

whenever I press my brake pedal, whether I'm moving, I hear a clunk coming from right behind the firewall on the driver's side. It recently started doing this. It also does this when I release the pedal. Am I in for as much of a nightmare as I think I am?

Had the exact same problem. I checked everything, replaced brakes, everything. The noise turned out to be 2 somewhat loose k-member bolts. Noise went away. I would check all (i think) 6 or 8 k-member bolts first if i were you.

Where are those bolts?

Also, did your TA do this when you were stopped as well? Mine mainly does it when I'm stopped and/or at very low speed (< 5mph)

There the bolts that hold that big azz black crossmember to the car underneath the engine. There are 3 or 4 on each side of the car. I believe there 3/4in heads. You have to take off the front wheels in order to get to the 2 back ones by the caliper.

Get under there and look

It did it at all speeds but was more obvious going slow. The car was very clunky going through parking lots when i hit the brakes and it sounded like it was coming right from the brake pedal and firewall area. all that went away when i tightened the 2 loose bolts.

Might sound stupid, but is your master cylinder loose? Pretty sure there is a plunger that moves forward when you hit the brake pedal, if the master cylinder is loose it would move every time you hit the brakes and explain the noise right on the firewall.. Just a thought..

It also seems to be heat related. when the car warms up, it does this, but when the car is cold, it doesn't. Also, it does it even when it is in park with the parking brake on. I think that would rule out the k-member.

I'm having the same issue only I only get the clunk after hitting a bump or driving down a bumpy road. After hitting a bump you feel a clunk in the petals like something behind firewall is hitting. I'm still on stock shocks so I'm going to check them and the k member bolts. Any other ideas? When driving down the highway or parkway on a smooth road it doesn't happen which makes me more clue less
