Default Stock "tunnel" brace

I've heard the brace that goes under your car (underneath the driveshaft) referred to as a tunnel brace....Anyhow, when I take off from 1-2 in my car I hear a banging sound, as if my exhaust is whacking this brace. Upon further inspection, the owner before me tried to modify the brace by putting several washers on each side to lower the brace & give it more room to clear the exhaust. My question is, can I remove this brace w/out having any issues with the car? I have hotchkis subframes and an STB on the car if that helps any. Thanks in advance.

I know there's several guys who have removed it but I would either install a few more washers on each side or get one of BMR's tunnel braces. JMO

I've had mine off for awhile with no noticible loss in handling. The BMR ones are an invitation for speed bumps to hit it. The stock one is so flexible anyways it's almost useless. Adding more washers will pretty much eliminate any rigidity that is has. Just take it off or make your own, which isn't that hard at all.

Take it off and replace it with a driveshaft safety loop. That's the wise thing to do.

i had to take mine off due to my 4" y-pipe collector needing all the room it can get. it doesn't need to be there with the trans crossmember a few feet in front. i've noticed nothing from removing it. also check for clearence at the drivers side header collector to y-pipe for hitting the floor board and over the axle on the panhard support brace. those were all my problem areas.

Like Ferocity said, the BMR one just hits everything. When I had my SFC's installed I had them throw on the BMR tunnel brace along with them. After about a month, I took it off and it's all scratched. Been running with out it since last July and 0 problems.

I've had my stock tunnel brace off for a couple months now. That peice of metal that you can bend with your hands does not provide any rigity or support for anything (at least none that I can imagine). Removing it will not harm anything, but I highly suggest a DSL.

Could you build a decent driveshaft loop useing the tunnel brace as a starting point? Just add a U shaped piece of tubing? Can't remember for sure if anything would prevent me from doing this.
