I consider ball joints to be "wear items", and figure 50,000 miles is a good time for replacement. Now, I'm sure that many would think that's a little excessive, but I like my car's handling to be precise, first of all, and secondly, since I'm not paying somebody else to do it, as I have the proper tool, it's only about $100 or so, to change out all four. (the uppers are bolted in, anyway)

And, as I said, the tool works on u-joints, too.

steer clear of the control arm assembly for fbody masterpro etc. I worked for oreilly's and they will last about a year or two on the ball joints.. MOOG is the best option but don't offer the control arms loaded. for the cost i am looking in to tubular upper and lowers at the moment. I'll keep you posted.

I'm in a similar boat, but I'll be loading the stock uppers with moog and probably doing UMI boxed lowers for durability. Something about running tubulars on the street isn't sitting right with me. But you probably have a different use for your car.

I will probably get a set of used lowers and replace balljoint and bushings with Moog brand and then having them powdercoated gloss black and then get a set of tubular upper A-arms

Good way to save on "down time", but I'd suggest getting them sandblasted/powder coated first....

Powder requires a fair bit of heat IIRC, so you want to do it without bushings and joints otherwise they get burned.

Yup!!


And if you're sandblasting the arms before powder coating, you don't want the sand getting into the new ball joints!
