Default Weight reduction question

Sorry if this is in the wrong place guys, but I was wondering if anyone has cut the back speaker area out for a little weight reduction,

and if it would hurt with having a full cage car is full gutted already. I tried to circle the part in the pic I'm talking about.

I wouldn't cut it out myself, At the most you will only lose a pound or so per side. Being the car is a unibody design I would leave it alone.

Honestly don't think the weight savings would be worth what you would lose in strength. Even with a cage, you can still get panel flex and warping. You may only drop a pound or 2 from cutting all that out

If you remove those sections you are removing support for the sail panel / rear of the roof (which supports a rather heavy back hatch...). I think it would be a very bad idea...

I did a major weight reduction campaign this winter and decided to leave that. There is a ton of weight to be dropped out of these cars tho. How much weight have you dropped and what have you taken out?

So far I've just done the basics tire, jack, speakers, bumper supports, carpet sound deadening, seat belts, seats, ac, heater core, "dash going vfn" hole sawed a few things. Going to start inner fenders and door panels next lol.

Sorry for the crappy pics, took them on my phone basically it's just getting gutted. I plan on putting lightweight carpet ect back in it, and cleaning it back up nice just a very slow long process with work and all.

make sure to take the door bars out, airbags, stereo etc. There is a lot of weight that can come off the nose of these cars that is unnecessary also.

My car still with power windows, t-tops, factory glass and dash, weighed in at 3000# with an ls2/pt88 th400 and 9". I have decided to take more out of it this year to make up for the heavier drivetrain

That's impressive! I would love to get this thing down to that, I was hoping to get it down to at least around 3200 with the iron 408 and blower.

3000# Good lord! What the heck did you remove?! Swap out all the bolts with zip ties? Remove the insulation off the wires? LOL!

All joking aside, it's amazing how much superfluous weight you can pull off of a car. Back in the day I used to run Fun Ford Weekends (I know, I know - used to be a Ford guy...) in the Trophy Stock class. My buddy would remove everything to hit the exact minimum weight requirement. If something had two bolts and he could get a run out of it with one bolts - off it came. He would always be within 1 pound of the minimum.

Pretty much everything outside of what I listed has been "modified" lol. There isn't much left to the front end other than strut towers, fenders and bumper cover. Carpet insulation is gone, dash is gutted, ABS and airbags are gone, manual brakes, manual cloth seats, lightweight battery (7 lbs) in the rear, all tubular suspension and coilovers. Trying to make it around 3200RW this year with the added cage work and iron headed BBC. Darn street car class rules

We should totally run yours across the scales at some point during your build... have you removed the door bars? Or was I supposed to do that?

Wonder where I'm at... removed the washer reservoir, ABS, EGR/AIR, hood struts, front sway bar, cruise control, door bars, both airbags, manual seats, tubular K member, tubular upper and lower A-arms...

What am I going to do, push it across?!
Let's get the motor in it first before we worry about weight!!!

As for the door bars? Come on, you know you're pulling them for me!
