Default Rotors and Braking

My stock rotors look like they have some hairline cracks in them.

What is a good rotor to replace them with besides the cheap autozone ones. I want a rotor that will look good and not rust on the part not swept by the pad.

From reading it seems that cross drilled rotors are more prone to cracking so if my stock rotors cracked would that mean it is a good bet to NOT go with a cross drilled rotor?

The Eradispeeds look really nice but I don't think I can justify $700 on rotors if they are prone to cracking.

What other rotors do you guys recommend? Powerslots?

Also looking to put some grippier pads in while I'm at it. Are the Hawk HPS the preferred pad? And should I go ahead and bleed the old fluid out when I do this. The car is coming up on 3 years old with 30K miles on the stock rotors, pads, and fluid.
Thanks

Move this to the Handling & Braking section, then do a search

And BTW, Autozone rotors arent crap, they are very good and stronger than the stockers.

I've already searched and have not found the cracking issue discussed.
I didn't say the rotors themselves were crap but they don't have a good coating that I am looking for.

Thx

The zinc or cadmium coating is completely useless. After a couple hundred miles, all of the coating wears off and they rust just like any other rotor.

It doesn't wear off the non-firepath part of the rotor which is what I'm looking at. Thanks for the link.

Brembo OEM from www.tirerack.com

They work great for me, even with race pads.

not true. I have had my coated rotors for a year and a half, no wear yet.

GM Rotors come with the full rotor painted so just the braking area wears off.

Are those Brembo OEM rotors coated in any way or are they bare?

Thanks

For Pete's sake, as mentioned, just by a Brembo or Autozone or whatever rotor and paint the middle of it with some high-temp paint. If you get a little on the braking surface, don't worry, it won't be there long. It's easy as pie and cheap.

Bare. But they work, they take abuse and they are not $400 like some rotors you mentioned. As stated, if you feel you must, paint the inside of them.

That is exactly what I was looking to hear. I just want somthing that works and doesn't necessarily cost an arm and a leg. I think i'll go with the OEM brembos w/ some Hawk HPS pads.

Thanks guys.

DOn't listen to the people that are saying the coating isn't worth it. I took the cheap way out and painted the hats of my Autozone rotors with VHT rotor and caliper paint - they are already rusting through the paint. And it's been about 2 weeks. It could be a surface prep issue, I just sprayed them with brake cleaner and wiped with a t-shirt - it's tough to scrub the hats of the rear rotors, as it's a rough surface, so it picks up just as much lint as you are wiping off.

The coatings won't have that problem, and it's less work for you.

Then you used crappy paint, or didnt prep the painting surface. Mine looked like the day I painted them after 10 months before I sold them for some drilled/slotted rotors.

Add some high temp primer and high temp dark gray paint and it sounds like a good plan to me. Available at any parts store.

VHT Cailper and Rotor paint. Preped with brake cleaner. If you read my post, I say it probably is because of crappy prep - but the rotors, particularly the rear rotors with the rough surface on the hat, are hard to prep properly - becasue after you soak them in brake cleaner, when you go to wipe them, the cloth leaves more lint than it takes off.

The point - coating is a CHEAP option (along the lines of $12 per rotor) on new rotors, and you don't have to worry about surface prep - just fork over the cash and enjoy.

People clean their rotors???? I abuse mine, wear them out and buy new ones. Race pads eat rotors (HPS work great and are easy on rotors). I consider a rotor and pad change as a set. They wear out together for me, so I don't worry about a little rust myself. I guess it is a personal preference. However, I can assure you that the Brembo OEM rotors work well and handle my abuse with no issues. If you want pretty, you're on your own, if you want brakes, Brembo is the way (they look just like stock rotors, without the warp).
