can't you just pick up the correct bolts at your local hardware store ?
I'm sure they have some grade 8 bolts. If not also check www.mcmastercarr.com they have a huge selection of high strength bolts and fasteners you could use.

Nope. The 4th gen PHB bolts are stepped. One end uses a larger hole than the opposite end (shanked). It is very likley a dealer only item.

I know McMaster has a bunch of stuff, but I was surprised that they carry any of that style bolt.

drill out the one side with a bit, you don't have to use shoulder style bolts, there's absolutly no need for them if you can't get the stock one to work.

1/2 inch standard Gr8 bolts will have a higher sheer strength (not that this is necessary, there is no need to spend extra money just to have a shoulder style bolt). There are no performance benifits using the shoulder style bolt.

Well, Spohn has them...they are a stepped 14mm-12mm bolt...I actually just use a standard 14mm bolt now so I don't have to worry about the stepped part.

Just in case anyone wants this info, I replaced my panhard bar this weekend so I measured the bolt.

The threads are M12 x 1.75 (coarse) pitch x 75mm long
the length is measured from under the head.
The first step diameter is .545" (13.84mm) x 1"00 or (25.4mm) long
the 2nd step is .420" dia. (10.66mm) x .500" (12.7mm) long

I still feel that you're better off if the stockers are bad or don't fit, to use a 1/2 inch Gr8 bolt.

It will have a higher sheer strenth. You'll only need to open up the one side of the bolt hole on the car which takes a few seconds with a drill. The bolts are readily available at most hardware stores. I think this is the best option, as your not damaging the car by drilling the one hole slightly larger.

I suppose if the shoulder bolts were easily available and were similar pricing (and not have to pay shipping charges from ordering), then go with the shoulder bolts.

Just my .02. Not trying to create an arguement of any kind :-)

Steve I wasen't disputing your method at all, sounds like the best , not to mention least expensive, route to take. I just happen to be replacing my panhard bar over the weekend and figured while I have the bolt out I might as well measure it. I figured I would post just in case anyone wanted to know what size the bolt actually was so they don't need to be at the mercy of a vendor for replacement.
I actually drew up a quick sketch today at work:

I totally agree your idea is the best way.
