2000 Camaro Z28 Power Steering Rack Options
hey all,
I have a 2000 Camaro Z28 and the power steering system works fine under heavy turning and has no issues other than a leak I have isolated to the power steering shaft gear top seal. I used UV dye to isolate the leak and its getting to the point of me not being able to ignore it anymore.
So fix it I must.
Has anyone removed the power steering rack assembly WITH OUT removing the driver side motor mount?
Also, has anyone ever replaced the power steering shaft gear top seal to fix this leak or will I have to replace the entire power steering rack assembly?
If I have to replace the entire power steering rack assembly I wish to know are there other after market racks (manual or power assisted that have faster turn ratios). I wonder how a manual steering rack assembly will perform versus the stock power assisted unit.
I am kinda thinking that if I have to replace this stock rack, to go with a manual one, so in the future I wont have to worry about power steering pump leaks of any sort.
Any thoughts on removal or replacement with other racks would be awesome
Thanks

I have a rebuilt steering rack sitting in my kitchen waiting for me to install it.
If you do buy a rebuilt one, make sure you match the numbers up. Don't be like me and get the old one out then realize you don't have the right part. Autozone sucks. Right box wrong part.
Now about the install. Kind of a pain because the driver side bolt hits the oil pan and the motor mount bolt won't come out all the way. So I just cut the bolt and installed a new one upside down.

I have that same freaking leak...from the top seal area of where the shaft plugs into.
I think when I do my replacement, I will simply grind off some of the length of the 2 main bolts that hold this rack to the K-member.....this way there will be room enough to remove the bolts with out them hitting the motor. Me thinks at least.
I have not done the work, instead I use lots of Lucas Power Steering leak goo.
I also clean this area often with simple green.
I may just remove the power steering rack/pinion assembly and replace it with a manual rack, then remove the PS pump and use a shorter main rubber belt. maybe...

Since we're bringing back ancient threads...
Mine is also leaking from the top shaft seal area. I hate how much the remans cost and that they're painted black. I can't seem to get anyone to sell me their used rack either. They just keep leaving me hanging.

All I can say is good luck!! I replaced mine 3 fn times already....remans r junk!!! The tecs @ GM and parts stores r dumb as hell and cant answer if the FE4 model is the same as the FE2 model! This is the biggest headache I ever had with a car!! Should of just rebuilt my stock one. Now its on to junk yards to find one with low miles. When I find one Im putting a tranny cooler on my return line so it doesnt get as hot and burn seals!!!!!!

Is it better to rebuild or replace?
If re build is the answer where is the best place to have it done?
if replace is there a brand other than gm rebuilt that is worth putting in?
I've found gm rebuilds from $600 - $800. What is a good price? And from where?

Not you as much as Strnmyster and this thread in general. He dug up a really old thread to tell Dave 96TA who hasn't even been on Tech since last may not to mention sold his car a few years ago good luck on fixing it, and when he quoted Dave 96TA the first thing Dave says is "Since we're bringing back ancient threads...". All I'm saying is to look at the posting dates in threads you find when searching and don't try to help people in the past, especially when back then they were pointing out others for having done the same thing in your new found thread. To those of us who catch the extreme irony of your ways we may or may not laugh an *** off at your expense.

bump. I have a '99 SS and my rack needs some attention. I figure I should take care of it before I put my new engine in. The options that I see are turn one rebuild, rack doctor replacement, parts store replacement, parts yard replacement and buying a rack from another private party/ls1tech member.
anyone else know of any other options out there? FRRAX was not much help.
thanks

bump. does anyone know of any other options out there besides:
turn one rebuild
rack doctor replacement
parts store replacement
parts yard replacement
buying a rack from another private party/FRRAX member
I called PSC and they said they would rebuild my rack if I would like them to since I am close to them.
