Default What do you guys think about Performance Friction Carbon Metallic brake pads?

I was just wondering what anyone thinks about these pads? Does anyone here run them? IS the brake dust bad? Are they comparable to OEM pads? I mean, for $40, they're hard to beat, and seeing as how I never really race the car, other than the occasional drag strip visit, and a few street races every now and then, I figure they'll doo just fine at the kind of stopping I need. Any opinions from you guys?

I have them, only ran hard in them of two days at road america last year, they performed well, colder days it will take a little to warm them up before they grip good.

Brake dust is minimal, it will be noticeable after a few weeks with out washing.

This is the street version pads.

Carbon Metallic pads are absolutely horrible if you daily drive the car. They dust like crazy, squeek like crazy, and chew the rotors up. They are a very ROUGH material, I have ran a couple of sets and never will again..

I highly recommend the "Quiet stop" pads sold at Pepboys. They are made of a ceramic material....very minimal dust, ZERO squeeking, and have a lifetime warranty. Closest thing to a GM pad I have ever used. They're around 80 bucks I believe, but keep your receipt and you'll never have to buy front pads again

I weent with Carbon Kevlars this time around and my dust/noise levels are just fine so far.

But, I've had Carbon Metallics on 2 other cars and I didn't notice any dusting problems at all, just slight squeaks sometimes. I didn't dislike these pads at all. You could not get them to fade, even working that car.

Over the years I've had good luck with PF pads for street use on various vehicles, so when I installed new KVR's on my SS I used the PF Carbon Metallics up front. I can't complain about them at all, but I don't know how they would perform at the track since I haven't used them for that. In my case, dusting and noise are minimal - very comparable to stock pads.

Pf pads are fine as long as you do a couple things. First if you have your rotors turned make sure that the person who does them uses a rotor finisher on them to get a non directional swirl patern. The pf brakes will squek if you dont do this. I know I work at Autozone!!! Also remeber to use brake quiet made by crc and lube your caliper pins.

HUGE amount of dust! Do NOT get these pads. They only lasted 8,000 miles also. They are horrible!

Do they grip well? I need some for my Dakota and if they lasted 8,000 miles, painted my wheels black, and got me to stop better than stock, I would buy a set.

Based on the quoted price, the pads are available at Autozone [with a lifetime free replacement warranty] for 39.99.

They are better than stock, feel less grippy than the durastops. The durastops dust more. They are not hard on the rotors, and have never squeaked. They look like they will last a long time, and are showing very little wear on the rotors [4k and counting]

I do not know what some folks are using for pads in this thread, but it is probably not the PF Carbon Metallic pads.

I have only used stock, durastop, and the PF from Autozone.

I've had PFCM pads in both street and Z-rated flavors. The Z-Rated pads were EXTREMELY dusty--I'm talking once to work and my white rims were dark gray. Impossible to keep wheels looking clean.

On the other hand, one thing I can say for them. They STOP. NOW. Especially in the rain, these were far better than stock and PF street pads. Street pads were great on my Impala, about the same dust as stock, and stopped a little better than stock. On the '97 Camaro SS I had, though, the street pads were just as slick as factory pads in the rain--I literally nearly crashed several times due to ZERO brakes in the rain. The Z-rated pads would slide at first, but built up grip rapidly enough to keep me from panicing.

Now I've got a 2002 SS, and the bigger brakes are a much-welcome change in the wet. I still will probably try Porterfield R4S pads soon, since I hear they're less dusty but have higher friction than stock and more fade resistance.

One plus about the dust on PF pads is it's BLACK. Not rusty metallic orange and some shade between brown and gray. Black. If you don't heat the pads up to meltdown temperatures, the dust also won't hurt your wheels like some pads will. Through long periods without washing (shame on me) my white wheels would stay nasty looking, but when I did wash them off, they'd gleam bright white. Simple Green engine degreaser/wheel cleaner did the trick.

PF pads wear like iron, too. I changed to Z-Rated pads with 45k miles on my SS and when I traded it they still had plenty left, at 96k. I'm pretty easy on brakes, though.

I guess you did learn one thing from the replies above. The Performance Friction pad STOP's! It does do that. You also learned that they are extremely dusty. I can confirm that as well. I have worked at the good old Autozone parts store for about 5 years where we sell those pads. They are the official pad of NASCAR. Every car in NASCAR uses Performance Friction. But that doesnt mean that they are for an everday driver. The only thing good about them, is they stop on freakin' dime. They really dont last much longer than the stock pads, but the performance is well worth it. They are made of a carbon metallic material instead of an organic material. In turn displacing heat better. So they are better on your rotors, as well as the pad itself. If you want your pads to last longer, buy some vented or slotted rotors, "or both!" Just my two cents! About the squeeking mentioned above, that is caused by the back of the pad vibrating on the caliper, not the surface of the pad on the rotor. That is why you apply the non-squeal grease to the back of the pad, and not the front! OK, there went another penny, make that my 3 cents! Hope this helped?

I've had a set on mine for at least 15k miles.
They dust up like a SOB, which I was ok with if braking improved,
but I was at the NFME event at IRP last year with them
and the amount of brake fade I got was not ok with me.
I may have boiled my brake fluid (fresh bleed w/Valvoline Syntec)
but I think it was more likely the pads.
Never heard any squeaking from them at all though.

fwiw, I'm planning on switching to Hawks.

I just installed my second set of PFC Carbon Metalics. They work well for street driven cars. They will dust alot the first week, but after that dusting is minimal. My last set of PFC CM's lasted just under 2 years. They will eat up the rotor also. I've been getting them from AutoZone, the PFC have Lifetime warranty and the Aimco rotors have a 2 year warrenty. If you keep changing them under 2 years, they will be the last set of pads and rotors that you will have to pay for.

Default Best brake pads ever made !

Performance friction carbon metallic brake pads are second to none ! I have been an auto service tech for 42 years , having owned my own repair shop for 21 years . These brake pads are quiet, produce hardly any dust , last forever n give you a soft brake pedal ! When it comes to heavy trucks , they outlast competitors brake pads 2 to 1 to 3-1 . They run cooler than other pads! If you want the best , use them !!
