Default Cannot remove nut located on top of front shocks!

How do U remove the nut located on top of front shocks/springs?? Mine is very rusty on the Passenger side. Having trouble removing. So far I'm using vise grips and an open ended wrench (also HD spring compressor tools). But now I cannot get it to turn any further. It is about 1/4 inch from being off. Threads look very rusty and I am using a ton of WD40.

If I get this off, I can install my new lowered springs. Driver s side is next - should not be as rusty (I have been told that the Pass. side gets water??).

Any suggestions???

I will try an impact tonight and see if that helps.

Brandon

PB Blaster. WD40 sucks.

Many people have to just hack through the rod with a hacksaw.

If you have more than 30k or so miles on your car, you may be better off to get new shocks anyway as the lowering springs will probably finish off the stock shocks pretty fast.

One good but inexpensive alternative is KYB AGX shocks. They are 8-way adjustable and about $90/each. I know Advance Auto carries them if you have them in your area and can usually have them next day.

I have a wire wheel in a drill motor and brush the rust off.

The rust literally melds the nut on there. If you dont need the shocks, cut the shaft, but make sure you have the compressor on there, or at least point it at someone you dont like!

When I did mine I cut the nut off using a dremel.

You don't need to cut your shock...Use some PB Blaster or WD40 works too, let it sit for a couple of seconds, and then hit it with the impact...

Sometimes I find that they still get a little stuck using an impact. Keep reversing the direction of the gun until you break it loose and then it should zip right off. Or, it will work it's way up each time...

Oh yes yo will , especially when the shaft breaks off with the nut still on it! I dont recommend cutting, but Ive had to in the past

YES!!! I should have mentioned but you definitely want the spring compressed enough to release pressure off the ends if you have to cut the rods.

One other options is to just take the assembly to a strut/shock shop and see if they can take it off. Many of them have a fix three clamp mounted compressor that's easier to work with. Make sure you take your new springs with you to swap them out.

This only applies to the fronts since the rears are a piece of cake to do.
