Default Tires follow road ruts

I currently have the stock 16x8 10 spokes with 245/50/16 Kumho Ecsta 712's all the way around. Anyway, they follow road ruts really bad. Will a different setup eliminate the problem? I'm talking suspension, wheel, and tire upgrades.

TIA for your input!

Dan

What's your alignment?

Stock specs on alignment shouldn't ride the ruts too bad.

However, a performance alignment will definitely road walk ...

Dan, When I had my SS it would do the same thing, I think it's just the way it is with the large tires on these fairly small cars.

I agree DARK AGE 53 hit it on the head, all these cars do this. Alignment & tire pressures help curb this but not entirely.

So a more rigid suspension set up wouldn't eliminate the problem? I'm considering getting 18" rims with a 35 sidewall tire. That's mainly for asthetics, but I'm hoping the lower sidewall will help out. From your replies I have the impression that all of this will help but not eliminate the problem.

Actually the lower the side-wall the less flex & damping the tire will provide.

I still have bad problems with this with my firehawk rims with firehawk SZ50 tires on them...if I let go of the wheel the tires will grip whatever comes, especially when coming to a stoplight.. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

These are all fairly normal traits of these cars. It's a combination of suspension geometry, tire width and profile that causes the car to follow the ruts on the road. Lower profile and/or wider tires usually make the situation worse, not better. There is not much you can do to help the situation except adding more boost to the powersteering system (recalibrated valves, etc), which is expensive and generally impractical. I would think a castor adjustment could help somewhat, but I'd be guessing if I told you what to try (I've just never really considered it). Good Luck.
