can I just remove the power steering and block off the rack?

I thought the point of going with no power steering was to get a manual rack which would save a lot of weight since the PS rack weighs a lot. How much weight savings would there be from just removing the pump?

And to try and answer your question I had an old truck where the power steering pump went bad and I removed it. Didnt have the money at the time to replace it so I went without it. It worked but it was a pain in the *** to turn the tires which is what I hear from guys with no PS on the F-bods.

Same here. I looped and run skinnies all the time.
Most guys that remove the PS get rid of the whole bracket and just run one small 36 inch belt for the low mount alternator. Motor revs quicker and if your deleting AC and PS then you lose a nice amount of weight from the nose of the car.
The downside is it won't be a fun daily driver anymore.

Stock rack and manual rack are not that far apart on weight. Manual rack will turn better. I would recommend skinnies all the time or it will be a bitch to turn.

its not a dd and I don't have skinnies yet. its a drag only car.
thanks for the info.
I have drove it without power steering before when I bypassed it once. I could deal with it at the track I think It turns ok to me when its moving a little. However I will probley get skinnies sometime this year.

Need some splainin' done
Alrighty... I did the search and found the thread, so at least I wont get cussed
What do you mean when you say "looped" the rack, are you just crossing the ports?
After that I just need a 36" belt?.... and take all the pwr stuff off.
My car is race mostly, lives most it's life in the trailer. I just want to get rid of the power steering.

A power steering rack that is just bypassed is definitely a LOT harder to turn versus having a manual rack that's designed to be exactly that, a 'manual rack'
I have a madman rack in my car and it's really not all that bad at all. Once you get the car moving it actually turns just fine. Sitting at a dead stop and then trying to turn the wheel is when you will definitely notice a difference. But if your running skinnies then honestly I wouldn't even worry about it. I run both 17" wheels and skinnies and with the skinnies on it feels like I have PS all the time
