Default Hose mod/ removing rear isolators. Guide

Hose Mod
Heres a write up on how to take the rear isolators off the rear springs which will lower your car ½ an inch to ¾ an inch in the back. It will take about an hour or less going at a slow pace. It was definitely worth while and got rid of the 4x4 look in the back.

Supplies
  • 21mm deep socket/ Lug nut wrench
  • 3/4 inch rubber heater hose
  • Wrench
  • Jack and 2 jack stands
  • open ended wrench
  • Hammer and long screwdriver

1. Jack up the rear of the car and place jack stands on the frame.

2. Loosen all the lug nuts and remove the tires
3. Place a jack under the differential, be sure its not on the cover.

4. Place a wrench on the nut behind where the shock mounts.

5. Use a wrench with a 21mm socket (or a lug nut wrench) and unscrew the bolt that holds the shock on.
6. Make sure the rear is supported by the jack and pull the shocks away from the bolt hole
7. Now lower the rear end with the jack.
8. The springs should be on their pretty loose, make sure theirs not a lot of tension on them and knock them off or pry them with a long screw driver.
9. Now that the springs are off the Black rubber isolators should fall off

10. Take some ¾ inch heater hose, and cut a slit parallel along the host and wrap it around the top coil where the isolator was. You might also be able to spray the hose with wd40 and just slide it around the top coil without cutting a slit in it.
(mines pretty rigged because I only had 2 pieces of hose that already had a slit in them, but they work and theirs no extra vibrations.)
11. Now just reinstall the springs onto their mounting places.
12. Next jack up the rear end until the bolt holes lineup with the bolts on the shocks
13. Screw back on the nuts on each side.
14. Reinstall the tires and torque down the lug nuts
15. Now lower and remove the jack, take your car off the jack stands and you’re done.

Here is a few before and after pictures. But Its a lot more noticeable in person, and the pictures weren’t taken at the exact same angle. Its definitely worth while though.

Measurments from fender well to tire.
Stock=6 1/4
right after mod=5 3/4
1 day after mod=5 1/2

It would be cool if the mods could put this in the apearence hall of fame or a sticky

nice work, and nice write up.

did you measure the height to the wheel well by any chance? to get an exact drop measurement?

From the other thread:
"I measured a few different places an it was just a little more than 1/2 an inch, an i guess it will go down a little more since the springs were decompressed for a while."

Thanks, I fixed the deep sockey lol. let me know of any other mistakes.

Heres the measurments. from wheel well to tire. 6 1/4 inch = stock. 5 3/4 inch = right after the mod. 5 1/2 = one day after.

So it dropped a little more, definitley looks good.

Woh......
What are you measuring, where to where?
You're car is insanely high.

Here are my stock ride height measurements.

:::::::::: Fender :::::: Inside ::::: Fender :::::
:::::::::::: To ::::: Wheel Well ::::: To ::::::::
:::::::::: Ground ::::: To Tire :::::: Tire :::::::
---------------------------------------------
**DRIVER**
FRONT::: 26.75" :::::: 4.25" ::::::: 1.75" ::::::
REAR::::: 27.75" :::::: 6.25" ::::::: 2.75" ::::::

**PASSENGER**
FRONT::: 26.75" :::::: 4.00" ::::::: 1.75" ::::::
REAR::::: 26.75" :::::: 5.25" ::::::: 1.75" ::::::

I placed a ruler flat on top of the tire for a measuring point and used a measuring tape to measure from that to the top of the wheel well arch.

My car is not lowered, that is the stock ride height. The driver's side rear is 1" higher than the rest.

Here are my stock ride height measurements:
Driver's Side
(fender-to-ground, fender-to-tire)
REAR: 27.75", 2.75
FRONT: 26.75, 1.75

Passenger Side
(fender-to-ground, fender-to-tire)
REAR: 26.75", 1.75
FRONT: 26.75, 1.75

it sounds like he's either measuring from the top of the inside of the fender well to the top surface of the tire, or the top of the wheel well arch (at the outside edge) to the top of the actual rim, rather than the tire itself

this is exactly the reason it's best to measure from the highest point of the outside of the wheel well to the ground itself, both before & after....that way, there's no confusion as to where it is you're measuring from....

5/8" heater hose and some muscle works great, no slits, good and tight.

thanks for taking the time to do this

I would of tried turning the jack stands the other way also and putting card board or something on top of them to cushion the metal to metal contact. Makes me cringe with it that way and see it bending the metal.

I went out and measured inside the well well.

DRIVER FRONT:::::: 4.25"
DRIVER REAR:::::::: 6.25"

PASSENGER FRONT: 4"
PASSENGER REAR::: 5.25"

When you measured yours, did you do the passenger side or driver side? Can you measure both for comparison?

I updated my measurements post above to include these.

Sounds like my car is lower stock. Can you take the other measurements that I took (check out my updated post #7)?
