what exactly does this tunnel brace do?
is it worth it??

It is supposed to tie the left and right floorpans together. Not a bad idea, until you look at what it is mounted to...There is a stamped sheet steel "bracket" that is welded to the floor and has sheet metal screws holding it on (not a proper nut and bolt). Now, with that said, if you use a subframe connector that ties into that mounting point (and preferably is welded to it), you can add some useful strength to the vehicle with the brace (subframe connectors like SLP or Kenny Brown). However, if you are going to pay the prices they want for a brace, you may as well buy an SLP (Or other brand) driveshaft loop. The DS loop will strengthen that mounting point with the added safety benefit of keeping a broken driveshaft where it belongs (or at least, keeping it away from where it doesn't belong....). Just my thoughts. Good luck!
