Default Best fo Both Worlds!?!?!?!

Ok, so the 02 camaro in my sig is the car I drive most now. When I'm out cruising, I take it through the twisties, but when some punk wants to race at the redlight, I don't back down. What can I put on that will get me better tracion for straight-line drags, but not hurt my twisties handling? I have around $600 to spend, and I don't want a radical race setup, just something to help out traction a 'lil!

Drag shocks = great idea.

Your sig:
1) you misspelled filter
2) you didn't list what wheels and tires you have.

actually, no.....not if he likes to "take it to the twisties". for that, Koni's are the much better option. you can still drag race with Koni's and get some good 60' times, but drag shocks are the exact opposite of what you want for stable handling at high speeds.

the thing is though, that Koni's are a little over $700 for the 4/3's and over $800 for the 4/4's. that said, they are WELL worth the money, i have them on my car and they're awesome.

Would some rear lower control arms, a panhard bar and relocation brackets help? All non-adjustable, because I don't want the have to worry about getting something set-up wrong and tearing up my rear end. Plus, I just want to install them and forget them!

yes those would both help, but the relocation brackets are gonna hurt you some in the twisties, but a torque arm will also help especially for nose dive

how would they hurt in the twisties? I don't drive like race track turns, just some pretty fast turns and swooping curves.

Will adding a bunch of traction-adding suspension parts decrease the life of my stock (I know, "WEAK!!!") rear end? Also, what are the benefits of adjustable components and how easy are they to set-up?

Drag shocks like QA1s offer little to no actual rebound / bound control. If you were to take a drag shock out of the box and compress it, It would not settle back to its uncompressed state like a stock or handing oriented shock. If you take a shock like this on a run with some corners, you would be very dissapointed by the floaty feel these shocks provide. If you are doing nothing besides going strait on a track, then you'll love QA1s. If you are doing anything else, including street driving, then pick up a set of Koni SAs. They are great if you plan on getting lowering springs, or if you want to leave the stock springs in and still get a nice drop and a great ride. If your tight on a budget, Sam Strano can sell you a package that includes a different rear shock used for 3ed generation F-bodys that cuts the price of the full set down a bit. If you like corners stay far away from drag shocks.

Those would be good for straightline runs but since they are a drag radial and I believe they have a softer sidewall they probably would not be good for twisties.. Correct me if im wrong

Read around. Not trying to be smart, but this stuff gets discussed a LOT. You could to the LCA's, brackets and PHB, and they can help traction. I'd not recommend non-adjustable, and I prefer the LCA position to be moved for the handling vs. the traction. PHB does nothing for traction, but does for handling.

Honestly, you need to figure out what you dislike about the car most, and start from there. The fastest way to hook better are more appropriate tires. All the suspension in the world won't help a set of 400 treadwear PepBoys specials, or a tire that's super stiff in construction.

As is normal for me, I say start with good shocks for all the other used other than drag racing. Put some good tires on it, see what you get and we go from there.

Listen to Sam, he is the man. Your goals are similar to mine so I'll point you the direction I have finally decided on. So far I've done the Lower Control Arms and adjustable Spohn Panhard bar. As Sam stated above, the LCA's helped traction and reduced wheel hop. The panhard bar stiffened rear handling a little and also it is adjustable which is necessary for lowering the vehicle. I also have Sam's Front Sway bar which made a nice improvement in handling and is great for daily driving. I remove it completely when going to the strip. Another mod I really liked was installing Subframe Connectors. I got a 2point set up from UMI and they really made the car feel more connected front to rear. After reading these boards, I"m going to follow the all around consensus for my similar goals and go with a set of Koni's and Sam's springs. This is a very thoroughly tested set up and always gets the best reviews.

I'd love to see you on a rear bar first. The 35mm front was designed in conjunction with the 22mm rear, and while you can use them like you are the balance of the car suffers a bit for it. Upping the front bar rate by some 30% (because it's an SS), the rear by 0% with the current setup. With a 35/22 set, you go up 30 and 33% front and rear.

I've ran the 555R's on a road course and the entire year this last season for autox. I prefer the 555RII's or NT-01 for the above duties but the 555R's sidewall is fine.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I have been looking at getting some new shocks and springs. I like the way your car sits, probably going to do the same set-up.
