Default WTB: LS1 Caliper rebuild kit

Anyone know where I can get one of these and what parts it consists of? Also, can I rebuild these calipers in my garage with shop tools or do I need any special tools like a press or anything.

According to mitchntx (a board member) you may as well buy new instead of rebuild. But to answer your question, I thought autozone carried the kit and you can do it in the garage with simple tools.

These things are very hard to find and they are expensive, the cheapest Ive found is like $75 for all four corners, pm me for the website(non-sponsor). At the stealership they are $125, and all they consist of is 1 rubber o-ring, and 1 rubber dust boot, per piston. When i went to autozone they had no idea what I was talking about, so thats a negative on autozone, pepboys, advance, or Orileys having them.
As far as rebuilding, you could do it in your sleep, very easy. Heres a full write-up

That price only covers 1 piston. Dual piston front calipers, and single piston rears= 6 kits, 9.41x6=$56.46. Not bad Ive never found them that cheap.

I used to do this all the time in the 1970s.

My last brake job was a few months ago. I went to three parts stores and did not find a single caliper re-build kit. Since my old dust boot was pinched, I ended up buying re-built front calipers for 140 USD.

The kits are very simple to install - just keep everything clean!

If I was not in a rush, I would have ordered the kits from GM and would not have bought rebuilt calipers.

That is a good write up. I followed it and rebuilt mine. The kits are expensive for what you get, a rubber o ring, a dust boot and a bolt but that is really the only place you can get them. I went to a gas station and used their air compressor to pop the pistons out and put them back together on my dining room table. Not hard to do at all.

Or you could be a lazy bastard like me and buy Fenco remanufactured calipers from Autozone for 40 bucks a piece + 40 dollar refundable core charge which you get back after giving them your old calipers. It's a little more money, but they are legitimate replacements. I bought two front ones when my bleeder screws were stuck.

I reassembled powdercoated calipers I had done for my car last year. I looked all over trying to find a reasonablly priced rebuild kit and found nothing. Ended up reusing the seals that came ont of the calipers and carefully reassembling them. 5k later I have NO problems of leaks.

I like the clean one on the right; I assume it was dunked in acid for a few hours; right?

...wow, you must be a labor intensive type!

Where did you buy the re-build kit?

My re-conditioned front calipers from the parts store were looking good on day one. Now, after a few drives on salty roads, they look beat-up again.

Did you spray your shinny new looking calipers with anything to keep them young looking?

Hells yeah I powdercoated them! I powdercoat in my garage, didn't take long at all. I'll post pics when I finally take some. They look great. I'm in NC if anyone's interested in getting any work done.

three years ago I bought a rebuild kit from http://www.gm-auto-parts.com/parts.htm
But this kit is only for a half caliper... one piston boot and one seal per kit.
A used caliper in good condition is cheaper than the rebuild kit - thanks to Re_and_Cheryl ;-)
