Ok so here's the situation I have had my 01 z06 Tranny rebuilt as my 3rd gear was grinding. I had the option of choosing between 2 transmission shops that would charge 3k+ and take time or reputable local who'd charge 2k to rebuild the tranny and finish it soon. Since I placed money and time a factor I chose the reputable local. I had thought the local would be good choice as I know people who swear by his work and those on this board who's had their tranny's rebuilt. There was a delay in getting my tranny rebuilt which wasn't a big deal but when I finally got it back it worked nicely. I payed the guy for his good work and he said I could take it back if he had any problems. Thing is after 2 weeks of working smoothly it started grinding in 3rd again..... I had told the local about the problem with the tranny he said he could fix it but for the cost of 1k .... He said I had possibly shifted too fast and that it's a pain to remove it and he'd do it for another 1k. So what I'm wondering what should i do? I'm back to the beginning with fed up tranny and -2k.

You probably cracked the 3rd gear steel ring . I have a customer that works at Lethal Performance here in San Antonio that did the exact same thing . After replacing the 3rd gear syncro and steel outer ring , he cracked it 2 weeks later . If you hammer 3rd in the Vette units when they have billet shift keys , its going to be an issue to deal with . I am working on a fix for this but don't have it available quite yet .

Either be gentle with 3rd gear or be ready to spend more money fixing it . Let me see if I can find the pictures I have on file of the 3rd gear ring versus the beefier 4th gear ring found in the Vette . Not sure why Tremec designed it the way they did but it is what it is .

You could have cracked the same ring . Matt cracked the one in the trans that came from Danny twice in a couple of weeks yet Danny never cracked it once while in his car . Ask Matt to see them , I gave him both of them each time I opened up the unit .

Usually if its the ring , it will tend to scratch at higher rpms . Low rpms and normal easy driving won't usually be enough force to spread the crack in the ring open enough .

Been doing it since I put it in when I called you on the way home. And I changed the fuild allready. Only put 500 miles on it. Weird does it then it doesnt.

Lately I've been driving in normal conditions and hardly shift at high RPMS so what could caused the ring to crack?

Also I've been gently shifting it into 3rd with little to no problems but when I try to downshift into 3rd it won't give

I think thats the issue . Most of the cracked rings I have seen cracked were from unit with billet keys . I think with the stamp steel keys , they fail before there is enough pressure to crack the ring .

Ironically , I rarely see them break in the Vettes . They break way more frequently in the F body cars .

I wouldn't get too pissed at the builder , chances are he did the job right . Think of it as fixing the weak link in the chain . Something else will show up after its fixed and that happens to be the 3rd gear ring in this case . Like I said I am working on something to fix this issue but its not ready yet .

should I go back and replace the billet rings with steel keys? Cause crap that's alot of money lost on rebuild minus price of the billet keys

I recommend Mike aka thesource he does all of ours and his service and prices are the best. He stands behind his work 100%. He built the trans in my zo6 that was making over 900rwhp. I beat the crap out of it for months on the street and a bunch of 9 sec passes with no issues at all.

well problem is lethal I already invested 2k last month and I'm down to 1K in the bank. The way things are going I'd rather put the car in the river than to actually pay another 3k+ to fix it
