Dumped exhaust illegal in Houston area??
Im wondering if it is illegal for the exhaust to be dumped in Texas, or more specifically Houston area?
Because im pretty sure i have been told that the exhaust has to exit from rear or the side. (Like on the Dodge Vipers)

yes it is illegal,
it MUST exit from the rear or side on a PASSENGER vehicle.
on a truck it may be dumped as long as it exits behind the cab, and not underneath the cab

Dumped exhaust is illegal. What you heard is true, it either has to exit from the rear, or out the sides behind the rear most door. The only situation where its legal is on a pickup truck.

I was told by a Williamson County Sheriff (Austin area, but probably a statewide law) that the exhaust can't end under the "passenger compartment", and since my car is hatchback, that makes the whole car the passenger compartment. He said it has to exit from the sides or the back. So that's how it's legal on trucks. Not sure how it works on cars with trunks though.. lol
He let me know my exhaust was wrong 6 times in 7 months... Cause $200 tickets "give me incentive" to fix the exhaust with all that money I obviously didn't have... lol, freakin' cops and their awesome logic sometimes..
Sorry, I'm still bitter about that, lol. Fwiw though, I've been pulled over by other cops and they don't seem to care about my exhaust at all. I hear the same from everyone else with dumped exhaust, most cops either don't know or don't care. It's just that one cop in my parent's neighborhood that was a car guy and knew the law because of his car (we had a talk about cars the first pull-over, when he seemed cool... lol)
I'd personally say run it out the back, to avoid any future hassles.

Well, here is the question i asked a officer a few weeks ago AT a car meet:
Me: "So Kevin (pct 4 Houston), what do you think about all these loud *** cars, does it bother you?"
Officer: Looks over at his partner, then looks at me, "We aren't the ******* exhaust police."
Awesome.
