I've seen custom plates now with 7 characters

The 7 digit plate is supposed to come out this fall along with the new design.

I bought new plates for the Crew Cab last month and it only allowed 6 digits. The vehicle I drive at work is now a year old and it came with 7 digit plates. So in other words, I don't know either

Are they the tax-exempt plates?

they were available through a separate vendor for txdot, but apparently they quit doing those custom tags so now txdot has to find new vendor. I think the company's website was mytags.com. My buddy called txdot yesterday and was told that custom vanity plates were on hold for now.

When I got mine done, I was told they offered 7 digit plates for a while, but not enough were ordered so they no longer offer them. Idk how accurate that is.

Yes, its a fire truck.

Also the mytags/myplates site went belly up. You could get alot of different choices of colors and backgrounds and they were legal to register on your vehicle.

A buddy of mine called DOT yesterday. The standard issue ones are going to be coming out this month. As for custom ones the lady did not know when they were going to start and said to call back next month.

Tax-exempt plates go by a whole bunch of different rules. I don't think anybody really knows.
