Default DFW: driveshaft help

anyone have a stock length driveshaft with a 1350 u-joint in the rear? i just need to swap in a known good driveshaft for a few mins to diagnose a problem.

im getting some weird clunking from my drivetrain after replacing my DS slip yoke, which i broke at the track. i'm hoping it's just a u-joint, but i dont want to throw $60 in u-joints at it if i dont have to... especially if it turns out to be the rear end, which only has 3000 miles on it

i dont want to drive the car out of the neighborhood until i know whats going on, so if your DS is the one in your car... well i keep beer stocked in the fridge i'm in SW dallas area

Driveshaft King 214.941.7122. They are on 30, just west of Downtown. They can balance the shaft (probably not a bad idea), and put in a new U-joint if needed. They are really reasonable.

You can borrow mine while it's out of the car though it is not in my possession. It's located in South Grand Prairie not far from you.

I got u-joints from Pep Boys for about 30 bucks, they are forged units also. I am running a PST shaft also. I would let you borrow it, but it has a 400 yoke on it.

anyone else have a stock length DS with a 1350 rear u-joint? i did get a shaft to borrow, but it turned out to be too long, and wouldnt install.

the only other think i can think of, is to take my DS to a DS shop and have them spin it up on the balancing machine... would that reveal if the u-joints were clunking or not?

u joints at napa were $18 a piece (stock u joints though) if you have a hydraulic press its a simple process to get them out.

i did a search a while back about u joints, and if they are rusted and you have more than a little wiggle in them you should have them replaced. under load the bearings cant adjust quick enough and cause a vibration, that being said we live in a pretty dry non salty area in dallas, your u joints are probably not the problem

hope i helped

yes, i've worked with him before for my clutch install... but i dont think i need to drive an hour each way to have a u-joint checked out. if it turns out to be my rear end, and not a $15-30 u-joint... then i will be painfully dealing with getting towed across the metroplex to painfully pay to work on my $2800 12 bolt thats been to the track 4-5 times on a 350hp bolt on car.

but lets hope it doesnt come to that

ok, i went to driveshaft king. really nice guys to work with there. the guy drops everything to look at my driveshaft. he tugs on all the ujoints, the yoke, pops he caps off to inspect them... he throws it on a lathe to watch it spin... says there's nothing wrong with it and doesnt suggest that i even waste my time getting it balanced.

so that leaves me with rear end... time to give jason a call

anyone know how much it costs to get new gears installed (parts & labor)?

and is it safe to drive the car with broken teeth just to go 40 or so miles to the shop to get new gears installed?

Are there only broken teeth on the ring? I bet the loose bits were causing the clunking more than anything else.

Seeing as its a small area I would think it could get you to the shop to get them replaced

yes, just the ring gear. the pinion gear is fine.

i called TDP yesterday. soonest he can get me in is like tuesday. he said it will be safe to drive there as he's 'had people with a lot worse drive a lot further'.

also, i gotta get an inspection sticker before i make that drive... as it expired while sitting on jackstands for 2 months.

Some old guy once old me that the best way to break it in is to take it to the track and run it hard.
