Default cam questions

I have a 99 trans am with just a few bolt ons (cat back, slp air lid and cai, and short shifter), what supporting mods would I have to do before I did a mild cam? What about a more extreme cam (trex)? I'm planning on doind LT's and y pipe before I look into a cam, but I'm just curious as to what supporting mods I would need.

Long Tubes are the most important...Then maybe an Intake Manifold....Atleast an LS6 but of course a FAST would be nice...And i would pass on the "Mild Cam" If you have a good tuner around thats all that matters. A good tuner is what makes or breaks the Driveability of a cam car. Ive seen 224/224 cams idle like dragsters and constantly die and ive seen T-Rex cammed cars purr like a kitten. Go big or go home! LOL. Try the Thunder Racing RapTR. thats my opinion

I really don't like the trex my self but I would definetly not go with any thing under a 230 duration. Headers and an ls6 intake are almost a must.

thanks for all the replies! Another question thoughg, I heard that with bigger cams Trex for example, you need to either get new heads, or I guess build your heads. Is this true? Or would this just be the best way to do it if money werent an option?

The TRex cam is the biggest cam you can go to without having to do any head work. But If you plan on doing heads you might want to look at another cam. People have put ported heads on with this cam and saw no HP increase.

That is why Gene told me to go with the TRak cam over the TRex cam. He said I will get more out of the TRak cam and heads over the TRex cam with heads plus my other mods.

Like I said it best to call them they can help you a lot more then anyone on here......... they know there cams.

"TRak" - 231/234 .640/.590 112 LSA 2400-6800 RPM Power Band. Excellent mid-range & high RPM power. 3200 stall, 3.42 gear, computer tuning required. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended. Comp 921 Valve Springs are highly recommended.

I went with the Valve Springs: Patriot Extreme Valvespring

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

T-ReX v.2 - 242/248 - .608/.612 - 110 lsa 3500-6700 RPM Power Band. Violent mid-range & high RPM power. Requires computer tuning, 4000 converter on autos, 4.30's or greater depending on transmission. Works very well with nitrous and proper tuning. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended. Due to the extreme nature of this camshaft, piston to valve clearance must be verified when using modified cylinder heads.

Gives you some ideas of what mods you have for what cam you might want to get.

TREX here and would not have it any other way! Just add LTH (1 7/8), LS6 Intake, and some 243 heads (241's if you wanna go a bit cheaper) and your golden for the cam. And I would do true duals over a Y pipe but that just my 2 cents.

He should already have 241 heads.

EG Mayhem II cam from Houston. 435rwhp/405rwtq to the wheels in my Z with stock heads and pulled hard. 2 of my coworkers and one friends have the same cam in their stock 241 head cars. One was 418rwhp through a stalled auto, one 426rwhp, and the other 436rwhp with stock ls1 heads/intake.

My car went 96mph in the 1/8 with a DA of 1500-2000ft in the hot houston summer air. Drove perfect with a great tune.

NP and they did not put 241's on the LS1 till 01-02 and in 98 they had the 806 casting heads. LS6 has the 243 casting number heads w/ sodium filled intake valves (lighter). LS2 has the 243 castings for the heads, but does NOT have the sodium filled intake valves.

It's actually the exhaust valves that are sodium filled. It helps to dissipate the heat out of the valve.

The intake valves are just hollow.
