Default College Station/Bryan peeps - opinions?

What do you think about this

through a family member, I have access to three vacant shops

one being walking distance from campus, three garage doors, big enough for 5/6 bays, small office, and workshop

a second little deeper into bryan with a single door but two bays - one with a 4-post lift and a paint booth in the rear

the third is in the 'rough' part of bryan with a couple of doors but nothing fancy

when I was stationed at Pendleton, there were shops everywhere where Marines could pull their car in, use their lifts, tools, air, etc for an hourly or daily rate and an extra charge if you had to leave the car overnight. I remember it being $60-80/hr. Since most of the on-base housing and barracks forbid you working on a car in your driveway (like most of the apartment complexes here), it made sense and these places banked $$

I could potentially get any location for a month or two rent-free but I would eventually have to start paying something. Do you think this area could support an establishment like that?

TIA

Damn that's sucks...you can't work on your own car at your housing or apartment...60-80 sounds steep...but if people pay for it then I guess do it...

Sounds great in idea but it would I do not think it would make it. When I was in the Air Force we had a shop on "hobby shop" on base to work on car to rent lifts and tools from it was only $4/hr when I got in 08. You do not want to deal with a paint booth with and the EPA for sure, I can promise you that. Your insurance alone would be atleast a $1,000 a month IMO. I used to a own a performance shop and just getting insurance is hard much less finding any thats affordable. The car scene here I just dont think would support it.

Your point is? I do work for several differnt shops that has nothing to do with a shop making it or not.

I'm sorry good sir. I regret to inform you that "jwfy" is an acronym for "just ******' with ya." This usually points out that a story has very few information and is purely comical.

What is the current shop labor rate?
Have you talked to someone from TAMSCC? They would have a good pulse of the current market condition dealing with gearjeads.
Insurance is going to kill you. Hard enough to insure trained mechanics against injury. But insuring yourself against any dumb *** who drops a heavy car part on their toe?

well, when i had the camaro up there i know it would have been nice to have a shop so close to campus..i wouldn't be interested in driving to bryan..i just don't like it there. but yea whenever i had to check on my exhaust clamps one time and my car being lowered it was a PITA at my apartment complex. also, being able to use tools at the shop and rent them while i was there would be great; for the longest time i was trying to find a fender roller.

heck, when i bring the camaro back down to CS i want to find a nice near by performance shop so i can start modding!

Agreed! Also with everyone having their garage open to friends not likely it would get much use. I wish I could get into something like that though!!!
