Default Cammed 5.3

Sounds pretty good so far, this is a junk yard 5.3 carbed and patriot cam, hopefully i will drive it tomorrow to see how it does, still needs a water temp hooked up and get the trans fluid topped off, this 5.3 will be running all motor till i finish gathering turbo parts, this is unbtuned as well, i stabbed the #6 pill in the ignition controller, carb is untuned as well, here is the video:

Ehhaust will be 3 inch into a 3 inch y and a bullet dumped.

Big blocks are cool but I wanted something readily available from the scrap yard I can beat on to 7000 rpm in all my cars, lol.

What cam did you use? I'm thinking of putting a 5.3 in a 74-77 Camaro (I know, most think they are ugly, but I love em...).

This is Patriots grind, it is 225/229@.050, 582/589 lift on a 114 LSA. I like it, but it seems the 3000 converter might not be loose enough but i have fine tuning left to do.

Yea, pretty easily, but i am not sure where the power band will fall off, i still need to install the tach so i can even see where it is pulling to, i know it was SCREAMING playing on the back roads trying to see how it was running.

that cam is smaller than what i had in my gto so my guess is that power is falling off in the low 6k range, mine peaked at 6200 and it was TR's 230/236 cam.

What year GTO? A 5.7 car will peak later than a 6.0 car with the same cam ad heads, cubic inches eats up duration, seen the same patriot cam run to 6800 in 5.7 liters so i am sure 7200 is where this one will pull to, also depending on your tune and supporting mods. My carb and victor Jr intake pretty much bitch slaps and induction you can get your hands on for less than 1000$ new, so top end is where the carbed setups really shine. I am using a 317 head set on my GEN IV 5.3, so i am still around 9.5 to 1 compression but flow the same as a LS6 heads, also another benefit for a smaller engine using heads that flow around 250 on less cubes. It is all in tot total combination, so if you had a 5.7 car, it would not surprise me you started nosing over at 6200 with LS1 heads, but it should still have pulled to 6500 minimum i think. But then again a GTO is a fat pig compared to allot of other car, my third gens especially, so i think you would notice the power band drop off easier than me.

it was a 5.7 car, it peaked at 6200 but it would rev past 7k, i just never liked doing that since i wasn't making power anywhere near there. i would shift it at 6700-6800 because the general rule is 500 rpm past peak to allow the motor to get back into the power band after shifting. if i do the BBC i will pay a little more attention about the rpm's and where it shifts for each gear because the car will be a street strip car with primary focus on strip, i may even pony up for a transbrake but i'm not sure if thats a good idea for a car that will see street duty.
