Default 8.8 build attempt

so my rear needs some work and pyle bros were going to charge me 950 just to rebuild my 7.5. I cant shell out the cash for moser 12 or 9 so im gonna build my own 8.8 rear. picking up a foxbody housing thursday for $50. then i'll look into internals from explorer or go aftermarket, not sure yet still researching. I plan on cutting tubes off and welding my tubes on and moser fbody length 31 spline axles that way I'm not short on width and can use my brakes.

anyone have a junk 10 bolt case laying around for cheap i can put under the knife lol so i can keep car running while building this. Ill post it in classifieds also.

Has anyone in the local houston area done this before for some helpful tips?

also before i cut anything supposedly IF i kept the fox tubes on and used their axles then the overall length would be 4" short (2" on each side) which would make it to where i could have a nice wide deep dish rim in the back. how hard is it to make the provisions to accomodate a wider rim. I know there is not enough room back there without rubbimg fender well. what is involved in doing this

Keep your head up. And I plan on taking lots of pics and a step by step thread of what I did. There are build threads on here but not very detailed

i'm savin up for a pretty stout build as well, but shhh don't tell anybody

and yeah i'm sure a lot of ppl would love to see a nice catalogued 8.8 build.

I bought a Moser Fab 9 housing from Bob @ Brute Speed for $800 shipped. I plan on having my own torque arm for it fabbed. It's cheaper if you build it yourself.

housing - $800
axles - $350
3rd member - $700
+ material for torque arm

came bare:

I then painted it myself (they charge $200 for powercoat):

So if you're looking for an aftermarket rear, I think this is a good option, just got to know how to fab some of your own stuff (or have someone who knows). Good luck with your build though.

the m9 is a bad *** rear, but i think i'd still go with a MWC. i priced them both out and it seems like the MWC comes with a few more options for little or no extra $$. but i'd be buying a complete rear + suspension not just the housing.

Oh, I'm not trying to dog on MWC, they do awesome work! I was just pointing out that if you want to do a little work yourself, in the end it's cheaper (even more cheaper if you decide to go with a spool). MWC's prices are also super cheap for the quality and workmanship you get! I'm just the type of person that likes to have things when I buy them, and I wasn't about to wait 3 months to get a rear...

OP what gears and diff are you going with?

yeah i just don't have the luxury of being able to weld a T/A myself. but i do have the luxury of a decent budget and plenty of time to wait for it to be fab'd either way you're gonna have a bad *** ride!

anyways /hijack.

M9 is a bad *** rear but I think the 8.8 will be more than enough for my needs. Spirited street driving with maybe track trips a couple times a yr. Plan mild head/ cam upgrade in near future. I'm a pipe fabricator in process of welding school so fabrication should not be that difficult.

Try to send gearheadtech a pm. He had one for sale in the Texas classifieds that he fabbed himself, maybe he can give you some pointers.

Westtexasbuff that rear end looks damn good. I can't wait to see your car together. You need to do a build thread eric.
