I think its easier pulling them separate. If you do, turn the motor 45* and it will pull out without any problems. If you pull them together its best to put the truck on jackstands so you can drop the tail of the trans down . Then crank it up a little, pull a little. Keep repeating until the tail clears.

Sorry to bump a two year old thread but I'm pulling a spare 5.3 at the junkyard this weekend(just the engine) and was hoping for some help.
From my reading it seems liek the best way is to make room in the front(removing front clip + rad), removing the hood, removing the exhaust from the manifolds then pulling it out from the top.
I've also read that unbolting the trans crossmember and letting the engine + trans "slump" down makes it easier to get to the bell housing bolts. I've also read removing the intake can help but that was on an Fbody forum.
The general plan is to remove the hood, unbolt the exhaust from the header, remove the rad and any other stuff in the front that might get in the way. Remove the wiring harness from the PCM, undo any grounds or mounted parts of the harness as well as any parts of the harness that go to the transmission, hook up some chains to an A frame hoist and mount the engine. Remove motor mounts/unbolt motor mounts, whichever is easier, drop the trans down by unbolting the cross member, removing the starter and bell housing bolts and then pulling the sucker out.
Any flaws in that plan? Anything I should do differently? Or anything I'm missing?

you guys make this too hard lol.
1) remove bolts from manifolds (against the heads) and let the exhaust hang.
2)remove starter
3)reach in with extension and squiggler and remove converter bolts
4) remove trans crossmember
5) let trans hang down and reach in with a long extension to remove all trans bolts. slide the transmission out to the side.
5)remove AC compressor and set to side (leave lines connected)
6)remove power steering bracket and set to side(leave lines connected)
7)unplug all wiring harness connections and lay the harness on the windshield. 8 bolts to the motor mounts and pick it up with a hoist and slowly turn the engine 90* inside of the enigne bay to avoid contact between the crank pulley and radiator.
dont remove the hood, dont remove the fenders, dont remove the radiator/core support, dont remove the intake/injectors/etc....too much ****. you have to have MASSIVE *** jack stands to get the engine and trans out together on a 00 silverado. even then, i'm not sure. i tried and it didnt work. once you do it a time or 2 you can remove and reinstall a trans/engine in about 6-7 hours.
look at the hood mount on an early style silverado. you can remove 1 bolt and stand the hood straight up without removing it.

1. Just remove the motor mount bolts.
2. Remove Trans mount
3. Hook chain to the heads
4. Hook other end of the chain to a stout tree
5. Reverse as fast as your tornado powered silverado will go
6. Sit in lawn chair and enjoy a cold beer
