Default What kind of insurance do you guys put on the cars you rarely drive?

I'm about to pay off the z06, and can't stand paying full premium on a car I rarely drive (about $130 a month). I called my insurance (USAA) and they let me put it in "storage mode", which is about $40 a month, but I'm not supposed to drive it, so it's kind of a pointless insurance . I want the car to be covered, but if its only driven once every 2-3 weeks, $130 a month just doesn't seem worth it. I'm just wondering if you guys use any other route for your cars you don't drive much, but to where they're still covered when you decide to take them out for a short trip.

Thanks for any help!

Truthfully, I only have liability. I think that I have never been at fault in an accident, I have uninsured motorist coverage, and most of the value is in the mods which aren't covered anyways. Just my 2 cents.

Just liability. I'm currently driving the car about once every 2 weeks, and I never drive it far.

Try American Collectors. They have polcies available for those who only drive every now and then. Basically it's a per year mileage cap.

I keep USAA full coverage on the 240. Even though it only sees the street like 1 weekend a month. They will give you a lower premium on that car if you explain that the miles driven annually are under 1000.

Just man up and pay it. If you try to get cute, you'll end up screwing yourself. Friend of mine had his car insured as "weekends only", with a mileage limit. He drove it to work one day and got in an accident. Even though it wasn't his fault, his insurance company dropped him. Not worth the hassle, IMO.

If I have to pay it, I'll pay it. I don't short cut anything when it comes to keeping my assets protected. I just wasn't sure of there was a way to be protected with a different type of insurance. I'm not worried about vandalism or hail etc, bc it's parked in the garage.

I use USAA. Full coverage on two vehicles is less or about what most of the people I know pay for a single vehicle's full coverage.

I have Progressive with 2 vehicles insured, a 2000 eclipse (my DD) and a 2002 Ws6. I explained that the TA is a pleasure vehicle and that I drive the Eclipse to work everyday. Liability on the Eclipse and full coverage on the TA is 90 bucks a month total. 15 for the DD and 75 for the TA. Cant really beat that, although I have been with them for 5 years and no accidents/claims.

Another good thing is you tell them how much you want to insure the car for. Mine is insured for $25,000 iirc.

Not pointless at all Patrick. Suppose your garage catches on fire? Suppose homey breaks in and steals the car? You want to collect zero insurance dollars?

Like chupr0kabra said, just man up and pay it. Not saying don't look into specialty insurance, but don't be an idiot and leave it totally witout coverage because you aren't driving it often.

Good point. Possible that's what he meant. He's known for acting penny wise but pound foolish, so I was pre-disposed to take the bad interpretation.

Then to give more constructive advice, I'd thoroughly check out any specialty insurance agency before switching from USAA. USAA is absolutely top notch and stellar. Not the cheapest, just one of the very best and fairest. I hear about people going with other insurance agencies because the premiums were cheaper... only to find out why when they have a major claim. It's too late at that point.

The thought of having no insurance never crossed my mind. If that was my thought process there would have been no reason for this thread. I just would have removed the insurance and called it a day.
