Default 5.3 with ticking at all temps

5.3 with 260,000 miles always full synthetic changed on schedule. Lately ticking at all temps and speeds. Seems to be slowly getting worse. Lifters? Critical?

Can you get a video of it running?

Most likely lifters, fix would new lifters. Eventually one or more will break or spin and take out your camshaft and possibly more.

260,000 is a good run. What weight oil? Have you tried a heavier weight to see if it gets quieter?

Might sound dumb but exhaust manifold leaks will make a ticking noise as well. Check for broken exhaust manifold bolts.

Not so dumb! That thought occurred to me too. If it was exhaust, I thought I would be better able to hear with my head under the hood but not so. Will certainly further vet that idea before I do a top end on it though!!!! Thanks.

Have someone hold a wet rag over the exhaust tip to increase pressure while you listen for a leak up front.

Then, make sure at that mileage you aren't scare to try 5 quarts of shell rotella 15/40 with 1 bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer. See what that does.

The first number in motor oil does not designate the viscosity. That is the cold weather number. The second number is what your after. I would do what zone said and also run a heavier weight like a 10W/40 or 10W/50 to isolate the source.

A lot of exhaust leaks will get louder under load so have someone put it in gear and give it a little gas or little revs and see if it gets louder. If so probably an exhaust leak.

These trucks are notorious for broken exh manifold bolts too. Unfortuantely they are fairly well known for lifter failures, especially the DOD/AFM motors.

The lifters are critical yes, so try to diagnose as soon as possible. They longer they go the more damage is done and the more metal that will be floating around in the motor.

Like said above, lots of broken manifold bolts from the factory...

I would almost bet on lifters, majority of the cars I work on are lifter related issues. only a very few have been rockers or exhaust leaks...
