Default cam ?'s

I was wondering how much did some of you spent on a cam installation and if you took it to a shop how long did it take to get your car back.

I was quoted $425 from a local shop to install a cam, valvesprings (918's,) pushrods, timing chain and an oil pump.

It depends if it's a cam or cam and springs. A cam install can generally be completed in 1 business day, if the tech can start first thing in the morning.

cam and springs about $175 4-5 hours
cam, springs oil pump timing chain about $250 5-6 hours

I paid $350 for cam, springs, oil pump, timing chain, and pushrods.

It was going to be done in one day but there was a problem with the timing cover plus it was better in my situation to get a better tune by taking two days and allowing a cold start.

I got a whole new valvetrain and exhaust system installed at a shop for about $1300 + tune. Not sure of the price for the cam install alone...

EXACTLY!!! I did mine myself about 3 weeks ago....its by far the best learning experience and it will give you pride in knowing that YOU are the one who did the work on your car....not someone else. Just make sure and do a lot of research on it and get someone to help you who has done it before. Just my .02

I wouldnt want to mess up my own car. At a shop they are professionals. I would do it on a car that isn't going to be used anymore or something to practice on, but not on my own. Just not me.

Its not a hard job at all.

All told, the hardest part is the valve springs(small spaces, spall locks, and big hands don't mix well!)

Give it a try if you've got a weekend to mess with it, you'll be suprised how easy it is!

I'm telling you man it really isn't as hard as people think....truthfully the only thing i have done to my car before i did the cam was an air lid...i mean come on....i did work at an auto shop for the past 4 years so i knew some....but if you can get one friend who has done it before let him show you what to do. You gotta learn somehow....Now if you got the money then by all means do what is best for you....One of the main reasons i did mine myself is b/c i'm a student and have no money.....but regardless i am very happy i decided to do it myself. You really learn a lot and the only way you can mess up something is if you don't do any research on it and speed your way through it. Go print off the directions off of LS1howto.com and find someone who has done it....and voala!!!....your ready to rock!!

I think Frank would/should do it himself......BUT not everybody has the tools/equipment needed to do the job.... You can come to my house and do it if you want though...
