Default Rear End question

i have a 2002 T/A with an M6 and my rear end is making a howling noise, also there is a heavy vibration in the passenger side of the car. I know these rear ends are crap from the get go but im trying to decide weather to take it to a dealer and just have the stock parts replaced in it. or should i take it do a performance shop and go that direction with it. I hate to spend the money on a rearend set up that I know was junk when it came from the factory but i was wondering what the cost would be for the performance route.

thanks

Justin

I'm saving up for a 9", myself. If it's a daily driver and you MUST get it fixed to get it back on the road, that's one thing, but if you've got the means to wait and get a 9", go for it. Spending money on upgrading a 10-bolt just doesn't seem worth it to me, if it can be avoided. That's just my opinion, though.

Let's put it this way, there's no such thing as a built 10-bolt. It's going to break no matter what you do to it. If you need to have it fixed, fix only whats wrong with it. Save up for a 12 bolt, 8.8" or 9".

I'm in a similar situation, except no vibration. Stock 3.42 on a 99TA. It's making a faint humming sound and there is a lot of metal particles in the rear end lube.

I added a magnet to the fill plug and am going to put new fluid as well as a few magnets on the inside to hopefully make it last longer.

It is a daily driver and I don't have another car so I plan on fixing it, not replacing it. Are there any cheap rearend guys in the Houston area?
