Yeah, I have tried to extract files from it. It wont work. He doesnt have the software for it either. I have tried to get it online and the website (itunes) says that the software that you can download only works on 2000 and xp. I downloaded it just to make sure and it wont work!

A friend of mine said that he had to register his ipod to his itunes on HIS computer. Basically, he was telling me that he can only use that computer that he registered it to to transfer music. That's what I understood though.

Of course he has to have USB support on his computer. But the hardware/drivers is not the issue, it's the iTunes software.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes
"iTunes is compatible with computers running Mac OS X, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. The program was initially developed on Mac OS 9, but OS 9 support was discontinued with the release of iTunes 3; in addition, no version of iTunes has supported a non-NT based Windows release such as Windows 98 or Me."
There's actually a petition someone started to try to get iTunes available on those operating systems: http://www.petitiononline.com/win98me2/petition.html
However, you can use other software instead of Apple's iTunes
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columni...rnatives_x.htm
"At one time, the iTunes software was the only way to load and organize an iPod's music. No more. Ephpod (www.ephpod.com) will also load and organize music on computers using Microsoft Windows 98 and later. And Ephpod has another great feature — it will allow you to move the music from the iPod back to the computer. This could be important if your original hard drive crashes and takes your tunes with it.
A second program, Winamp (www.winamp.com), also can be used to load and unload the iPod. It is more complicated, since it requires a plug-in — Ml_pod (www.mlipod.com). Winamp also works on Windows 98 and later."

you can use an ipod with a windows 98 computer. you need 3rd party software. do and internet search, i forget what it is called. it is about $25. I did this for a frienda couple of years ago. we also needed toinstall a firewire card in her computer...about $15.

It does work, though, supposedly.
