Sweet...a local w/ knowledge!!

Truck I bought is a 7.3 / 2001. It has a few miles but is in really great shape. Looks like it has an aftermarket 5'' exhaust, has a K&N filter, and is a stick. Takes a few extra cranks to get started though, even if ya leave the plugs to warm a little longer than the idiot light. Glow plugs or relay need to be replaced??

Also wondering if I need to refurb the injectors. I just want it to run for a LONG time considering the price of these things.

PM me if ya want, and thanks for the assistance.

it could possibly be the glow plugs starting to go out. Another thing to think about would be the batteries. It takes a LOT of energy to get that big engine to turn over. We have a 99 7.3L and every time the batteries start getting even a little tired you know it! And as far as durability and long life.....i PROMISE you will be happy with this truck. Our truck just turned 260,000 miles last week and so far the only thing to be replaced other than regular maintenance was the water pump @ 140,000 and from what i have seen that is about when they all go out give or take ~20,000. I got my first job @ a mechanic shop in my hometown in H.S. by changing out the waterpump on our truck by myself.

Can't beat the 7.3's The 6.0's have killed Ford, 50% of them have to be replaced it seems like. That's why Ford is bringing out the Twin turbo 6.4 for 07, they can't wait for the change with the new body style in 08 or they will be looking at bankruptcy again.

I replaced the cam sensor on my 01 7.3 and that did the trick.

If it has the block heater, try plugging that in and start. Sounds to me like the glow plugs. If it's turning over slowly, then it's prob the batteries.

Check out www.ford-trucks.com

Great place for maint. tips and tricks....it's the LS1tech of ford trucks.

I have a 96 7.3L with 160K on it....runs better than my 2004 6.0L...be good to it and it'll be good to you. FYI, if the exhaust was done, it's likely the previous owner had a chip/programmer on it....or still does. Get an EGT gauge and keep an eye on it....that's about the only thing that will doom these trucks. I still see 94-97's going for $10K with 300+K on em....GREAT engines!! Good choice on the stick too....Ford hasn't come up to par on the autos yet.

Injectors....pricey!! Even if you decide to rebuild them, you're looking at around $800-$1000. I have to dig into mine here soon....the older ones had a problem with leaky o-rings....I think yours should have the updated ones. I believe there is a "buzz" test you can do at a local ford dealer....basically checks to make sure they're all working and responding. I've heard that the under the valve cover wiring harnesses can get fried. To sum it up, I've only seen electronics failing on the injector side, not the injector mechanics....so, I'd say drive it until they fail, then rebuild.
