White-knuckle ride
The weekend before continuing his quest for the NHRA POWERade Funny Car title at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, Ron Capps got a scare when he smacked the wall at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.
Capps was behind the wheel of Jeff Gaynor’s nostalgia fuel Funny Car, attempting to improve on an earlier 6.00 run when the Barracuda-bodied entry launched into a big wheelstand. When the car landed, it broke part of the A-arm front suspension, sending Capps, who was in the right lane, across the centerline and into the left guardwall. Capps was not hurt, but the car sustained significant damage.
“We were trying to get that [5-second Club] jacket,” said Capps. “The starting line was in great shape, and the car lifted the front end. I got off the throttle, but when it came down, I lost the steering. I’m not hurt at all, but I feel bad for Jeff Gaynor. Hopefully, he can get the car fixed so we can come out next year.” (Photos by Marc Gewertz)
