Update on my Brother from IED
John made it here to Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMCS) at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio on Sunday evening. Fadalia and I were able to see him right after he arrived and was checked in. He looks good and was as ornery as ever.
The facilities here are first rate and the staff has been great. The Army even has lodging for parents and family members here on post, so we've been able to stay nearly next door to BAMC, within in easy walking distance.
Johns heel bone (the Calcaneus) was badly shattered when the IED went off beneath his Bradley. He was in surgery today for three hours to try and piece it back together again. He's going to have to remain in the hospital for a week or so. After that, we expect that he will remain here on post until the incisions in his foot heal and the risk of infection drops. Following that, it's possible that he may be released on extended medical leave.
All in all, they don't expect him to be fully healed for 11 months or so, although he'll be able to put weight on his foot in about three months. It's possible that he may have a second surgery much later to remove some of the hardware they installed today, after the bone has healed.
However, any thoughts he may have entertained of becoming a star on the Ballroom Dancing circuit are probably ruined.
At the moment he's fine, although he's pretty much out of it. Evidently, Morphine is pretty good stuff.
