Default Jobs while in college with family...

what kind of jobs do you guys have that are in college full time and have a family to support? I'm looking to start when i get out of the military, (september 2007) when the new semester starts and I'm trying to get some idea's for jobs to be looking for while I'm attending. It's just me and my wife, so its a little easier b/c we don't have kids, but I still have to pay for a place to live, cars, insurance, ect. Right now I'm a Hydraulic/Pneumatic Technician and work on Flight controls/landing gear for F18's. working at a airport is a option for me, but I'm trying to stay out of aviation. I have afew idea's of what i can do, but i want to see what you guys are doing and if its something I'd like to look into. also do you know any good sources to find employment in Houston? (houston chronicle, online, ect.) thanks for the help.

Valet Parking,
sounds like a bottom end job,
but you can make $75-$200 a night, flexible scheduling,

Work 3 days a week, like Thurs, Frid, Sat, make $75-$200 per night cash,
Which is $225-$600 a week, no taxes, Which is $11,700 - $31,200 a year,
Which is pretty good for only working 3 nights a week,
and of course you can work more if needed.

A $9 an hour job only pays $300 a week after taxes, if you work 40 hours.

decent money, but its not guaranted and its all night, for good money atleast

Why stay out of aviation? Do what you're good at, and can get paid well for, while you are attending college, even if you want to move out of aviation.

It will be easier on you and your wife, and you will probably make more money anyhow.

if you can do night school, discount tire can be a great job.

well its something i can always fall back on, and if i just cant find anything that makes enough i will do that. Its just something I've done for so long, so I'd like to try something different. but like you said, i might have to stay with aviation for now since its something i know. at least until I'm out of school. I'd just like to find something less stressful while I'm in school. but at the same time it might not be as stressful outside the military, so i guess i can look into that.

this might not sound "good enough", but i've been working at carwashes since high school and I still do(in college). you never have to work nights and overall I make about $15+ an hr including hrly/tips/commission. The quicker/harder you work, the more you'll make. I usually go pretty damn slow( I daydream alot), but I still make out ok.

full service. with vacuumers/ preppers/finishers/detailers etc.

Im a finisher/detailer. When you detail you get a commission. but I usually like to finish. The car doesnt need to look"perfect".

I work in a warehouse and make $500+ a week because some weeks we get overtime and bonuses, its not that hard only when its my turn to unload the trailer than its a biatch but im used to it already....

I work at a FedEx at the airport as a material handler part time. Start off pay for me was $12 an hour and your guranteed to be payed at 17 hours a week, hours arent a problem though we get about 20-25. Also they have a pretty good benefits package for part time workers and my favorite is the tuition reimbursement. Theyll reimburse you up to i think $3000 of your tuition.

Aviation isnt something you can easily fall back on. You will have to do some schooling to get your A&P... as I doubt the local FSDO (Flight Standards Disctict Office) will sign you off completely. I dont know how much he would, but the going rate for A&P school in Houston is about $20,000-$25,000 for the whole deal.

On a side note, I work the front desk at a Holiday Inn near me, and I make $6.50/hr. Its cake work.

If you do it right (community college for the main courses, 4 year school for the rest) you can make a profit with the GI Bill... its at 1075.00/month right now. Plus, if you use up all your GI Bill... you can look into the Hazelwood Act. Example:

My tuition this semester Community college with 12 hrs): 999.00
Books: About 300
Get the Pell Grant: $700 back at tuition... so thats down to 299.00
GI Bill every month on the 7th: 1075.00

So you pay $299 for 12 hours, $300 for books. But for the 3-4 months you are in class, you get paid $1075.00... or $4,837.50 for the 4.5 months you are in class. I think you may be able to live on that. Plus get yourself a cush job (Front Desk at a hotel is a JOKE) and suppliment your GI Bill income.

I agree with Cyphur! Why get out of aviation? Just because SOME airlines are having troubles doesn't mean the ENTIRE industry is dead. Honstly, I would stay away from the airlines anyway, but there are plenty of Repair an Overhaul places here in the D/FW area.

When I got out of the military (F-15Avionics Backshop Tech) in 2004, it took me 10 months to find an aviation job, I have three kids and child support to pay and that was on $15/hour full time and my current wife NOT working (at the time obviously, this is 19 months ago). Oh yea, I completed my Bachelors before I got out, and I was enrolled in my Master's Degree three months later. So, I was working 40+ hours a week, and going to school one day a week for 5 hours.

Yes, it can be done! Good luck!

Now THAT depends, he might be able to get at least the "A" just by practicality and doing the job in front of the FSDO. The "P" might be a problem for him, that he might goto school for.

The A&P mech is highly sought after these days. With all the layoff's in the last 5 years the Airilines are about ready to pay those guys in upwards of $30/hour. To put that in perspective, I've got a guy working for me now that is next on the American Airlines recall list.

#1- There is a lot more to the "A" than landing gear......

#2- Lay-offs=TONS of mechanics with experience looking for a job.


As far as airlines are concerned, they are looking for people with 3-5 years experience..... on their aircraft. General experience counts for **** anymore. If you want to work for Southwest... better have 737 experience. AA, either 737. 757, or Airbus. As a matter of fact, my cousin is a Purchasing Manager for American Eagle (he buys all the parts for the aircraft), and they wouldnt hire me because I dont have Embriair (sp?) experience. Hell, I knew the HR head honcho at Southwest and I didnt get past the question "Do you have any 737 exp.?"
I have my A&P, and havent touched an aircraft in 2 years because of the job market, or lack there-of (at least around Dallas, not available to move). If you go into aviation.... be available to move somewhere you dont want to live. 90% of the jobs available to new techs are in the middle of nowhere....or are contract jobs. When I showed up to my first job, a guy asked me if I was a newb... I said yes. He said, "Hope you like moving, cuz if you work for an airline, you are going to get laid off. Contracting is where the money is, and that takes relocating."

Oh yea, and most companies dont pay for relocation on people with no experience. And say all you want about his Military experience... my wife is an A&P, and she watches ex-military come and go all the time because they all think they know what they are doing, and fail to ask questions when they dont.... so they end up breaking something really expensive.
