I have never found a better source for camera reviews than www.dpreview.com
You can search reviews based on how much you want to spend, size, megapixels and other specific features. They also have really in-depth reviews of most cameras as well.
The problem when you ask any specific person is they get attached to one brand, or only have had a couple of cameras.

No problem.
After I researched a ton for a point and shoot for my wife, I grabbed a Canon SD750 for her. I use a big *** professional type camera, but it's tough to carry around and deal with every day. The little Canon that my wife has takes really good pictures without having to adjust settings, it also has a HUGE screen on the back which is really cool. Has face recognition that I had never heard of before this year, but is handy when you take a lot of low light pictures and you're not sure where the camera is focusing; takes a lot of the guessing out of it.

THE camera to get right now is the semi pro entry level Canon Rebel XTI. I see these things everywhere I go now. Amazing quality, and user friendly software. They even have books/Dvd's on how to use it efficiently.
