I have a General Business degree and maybe two turn arounds worth of experience which probably equals to about 6 months of experience as a helper. I worked at the Valero plant during summer breaks from school. I plan to go back to school in August for the Process Tech degree. Not sure if I should get a certificate first or just get the degree all together. What I like about the degree program is there is a 96% job placement rate. I wish I would have known more about these type of positions and how much they pay before I started my business degree.

Where I work I didn't have any operations experience at all. They preferred it that way so they could train me to do things their way. I started out as an apprentice operator trainee. I go through 6 different areas of the plant in 6 month intervals over a period of 3 years. After that I will be a journeyman operator. Starting pay was $22 and top out right now is $35ish I believe.

I dont have a degree or anything that would help get me hired on. Most all the plants will promote within the company. I highly doubt that you will hire in at the supervisor level. Maybe a contract coordinator position if your lucky enough that nobody inside the company wanted to take the job. But usually when you get into those positions you lose your bargaining rights and you are considered inside payroll.

Graduated hs and took the 2yr coarse at san jac. Made 77k my first yr and first hit 100k at 26. I work at chevron and top pay is about 36/hr but getting a raise in a month.

Jeff do they not drug test at your facility? You gotta be smoking crack to pick 4 on/4 off over dupont, lol.

to be honest with you, there aren't many "supervisor" titles anymore.

they're called "Leads", but it's just a stupid title - when **** hits the fan, who's the Lead !?!? you don't get paid anymore for being a Lead.

you're either a worker bee, or you're management.

What's the flint hills labor pool. How far are you from graduating? How are the courses and professors. I just applied at valero at three rivers. I got a testing date scheduled in two weeks. Well see what happens

the labor pool is where you get hired on and are basically mentored by senior operatoes there i havnt really talked to those guys in blue much. and the professors are pretty laid back n fun. i think i have about 1 year left to finish up. but one thing not all the classes are offered every semester so it will take a little big longer to finish. the main person is mrs rector she also teaches alot of the classes. and in my insrumentaion class there is this guy with a charger n i really wanna put him in his place but theres always traffic when we leave haha

On average with a "good" company in Texas operators make around $80-90k after the bonus toped out with no O.T. If you are a OT hog you could make between $130-140K depending on the OT availability. Some operators have it good some have it bad just depends on where you land. I have been an operator since I was 18, I'm now 30 and want out so I'm finishing with my Petreolum Engineering degree to drill for oil and gas now.

Thanks chaos. I just want to make some money already tired of not being able to find a job. What attracts me the most to this position is the pay of course but also the placement rate (96%). Also haven't heard of not one person who doesnt like their job. Looks like I'm going back to school in august.

After I passed the testing for Dow Chemical I had a phone interview which was weird. They asked questions like: How does your current job relate to the one your apply for?, What situation can you recall where you had a conflict within a group? What was it and how did you handle it? Reasons for leaving other jobs in the past. And of course why are you applying for this position?
