Default "oil change" light question

yesterday when i was coming home from my gf's house my "oil change" light came on, but i thought that was weird because i just changed my oil under 2k miles ago. but again this morning i was going to work and it was on, but went off a couple minutes later. i checked my oil when i got to work and it was a little under full (due to a leaky rear main) and was still amber colored. the light comes on everytime i start my car but goes off about 2 minutes after the car is started, whether i drive or not.

i use Mobile 1 full synthetic if that makes any difference...

they are correct. it comes on every 3kmiles and you have to reset. Hold the odometer button in and turn the key on, hold until light turns off, 10 sec or so. lol just had to do it to the camaro yesterday.

lol I love that people try to screw you with the 3000 mile oil changes. They changed oil every 3,000 miles back before oil filters were used. That was with driving on dusty roads. I think we've come a long way since then.

i've heard people claim that synthetic can last 10k or so, but i still like to change it every 3-4k.

and yes, it is a trick to claim that oil needs to be changed at 3k. I work at NTB and i've had managers say to put on the stickers 3k miles so that people come back more often. it's all about business really...

the oil's longevity isn't the issue, it's more important how long the filter can filter efficiently.. fram has a long life filter that's good up to 7500 miles and mobil has oil that's good for 10k miles i think.. either way, the filter's gonna need to be replaced first but even 7500 miles is tight..

shame on anyone for using Fram.

fram/penzoil/cheap filters only filter down to 50 microns

mobile 1 and comperable filters filter down to 25 microns

and the kicker is K&N filters filter down to 10 microns.

flame on the numbers if you want, but it wasn't K&N where i got my numbers. i've heard it from a couple different sources.

plus i think for a couple extra bucks it's worth it. not to mention K&N has those handy heads to get a wrench on. just my .02

According to the manual, the light comes on NOT by the miles but the times the engine turns...which i must say is a much better calculation of oil life rather then just miles, becoz higway miles are alot different than city miles. PLus, it will calulate how hard you have been on the motor.

You can also reset it without having to lose the mileage on your "tripometer."

Turn the key to the "ON" position, press the gas pedal to the floor 5 times, turn the key to the "OFF" position, and then start the car.

The light will be off and your miles are still there.

I understand that there is no lab in the engine checking oil quality....I was just stating what it said in the manual. First hand experience was that the oil light came on after 2200 miles, the next time it came on was over 5000 miles later. I know its not 3k miles, unless my odometer is messed up.

LOL.. does that mean you have not ever changed the oil..

some people are so into the tell me when its time to change oil.
I had a certain person, not mentioning names, ask me if they could really run their car without an oil change for 25,000 miles.. I was like WTF..

where did you hear that from... LOL
they heard they could... would not say from where.
But I was like FUCK NO... if you want to buy a new engine.

do you know why oil turns black? - Carbon! by product of combustion
the more of carbon in your oil the darker it gets and that carbon is like micro grit so change oil and filter regularly! for giggles im gonna try K+N next time as my high mi engine(140k) gets pretty dark at 3k Delco makes a synthetic filter for the olds SB its a PF35L - L designating synthetic- anyone know if they make a synthetic filter for LS1/LS6 ?
