WTF are you rolling your eyes at?? Dont hate cause your ***** is to big for a liter bike.If you ride hard you will go down learning either way.If you cant accept that then dont buy a bike at all.Besides thats a 5yr old bike anyways. The new 6's aren't that much slower if at all.

02 paid 4800 for it have and i belive that if you dont respect it you will fall. Ill just gradually get the hang of it. Im not trying to learn to do tricks or anything like that in fact im gonna strech it and lower it a little bit. I just like that look of it. And i was gonna buy a newer one but ill save that till i learn to ride better. That way i dont have to learn to ride from 250 or 600.

BTW: good choice in bikes.I had a few 06 g1000's and loved them.Aside from the 07's they are the best bike i've been on.

I say go for it. I've been riding for 8 yrs and started by taking the Defensive Driving course which helped get my license.
My first bike was a Ninja 500R and then an R1. I had to go with the 500 cause of the insurance rate being high (around 300 a month).
Once I got older I got an R1 had it for a few months than started selling off all my toys. Had another baby on the way.
So, I say enjoy it, ride safe, Wear a Helmet, and watch out for the other driver. Oh, it wouldn't hurt to buy a Joe Rocket jacket w/pads, it will help if you lay it down.
And that's a sharp looking bike.

I had a 03 R1 in 05 for my first bike EVER ,never rode a dirt bike or street bike.I never dropped it or laid it down in almost 2 years and 14k miles of riding.I wasnt exactly what you could consider a "safe" rider.
Dont worry about what others say to you just go out be safe and have fun.

nice bike man. my friend bought his first bike, an R6, and loved the hell out of it. he was a pretty responsible rider and didn't usually take unnecessary risks.. but even he couldn't handle it. he passed away 10-13-07 in a motorcycle accident, trying to pass a suburban that veered into his lane to make a left turn at the last second.
just be safe and you'll love it. God Bless all the fallen riders

yeh, the guys who say its ok that you got an r1 are one of two people
they're either the guys who are really coordinated and went big and got away with it, or they just got lucky
the guys who are saying be careful, are the ones with experience, who know the things that can go wrong
just stay safe, and definitely respect the power, props for a nice bike and good to see another rider on tech
