Exhaust design is one of those weird things that involves changing the way you think on sizing vs function. Most all the good collector ends get smaller then cone back up bigger as a way of increasing velocity. Many mufflerless NHRA collectors will cone up larger, then reverse cone smaller. This helps extend power production past peak power, so they say. No one size fits all on what works best either.
We're talking about expending pulsed amounts of hot air here, not water flowing through a pipe. Different rules.
If you really understand what you're looking at , the x-pipe isn't a restriction.

Many thought it was restrictive, even after it made over 1100 rwhp. So, at the customers request, we removed the X and replaced them with straight 3" pipes and it picked up absolutely nothing but sound.
It made the same power at the same places exactly. It's louder now though, which he wanted anyway.
