Default Gearwrench - Sears sale

Sears is selling Gearwrench brand ratchet wrenches for $39; I got a set with 8 wrenches. They are chrome plated and polished... not too bulky like the Crapsman brand....

I assume the famous Sears replacement guarantee does not apply to the Gearwrench brand tools.

I also saw tool boxes that look exactly like Husky boxes. I guess the confirms that they are actually made by the same company...

Question

On jmx's cam and spring install page, he recommends a set of gear wrenches for the install, but I can't see where he used those wrenches. Forgive my ignorance, but what are gear wrenches, and why do we need them to work on our cars?

I plan on going to Sears any day now to get a pulley puller, and I just might get the gear wrenches, too, if I can figure-out why I need them.

A gear wrench is a closed-end hand wrench with a built-in ractchet. They are VERY popular now because they save time. I use mine everywhere I can fit a normal wrench.

Question

Thanks a lot Robert!

I see, a hand wrench with a ratchet. I can see how that would come in handy. I thought the "gear" referred to what the wrench was used for (gears), but the name actually means that the wrench has a gear in it so you can ratchet it?

Gear wrenches are about the best investment you can make. They've saved my *** plenty of times. I have the Craftsman version and have yet to break one. My dad has some Gearwrech products and they seem to be just as good if not better than the Craftsman stuff.

I just ordered two sets from Snap-On. I may return them for the Sears version. Can anyone confirm the replacement policy for gearwrenches?

I saw a set of gear wrenches from Mac tools at the NHRA Nationals in Englishtown NJ. They sold for $180 and the head swiveled. I think there were about 10 wrenches to the set.

A really nice quality set.

Walmart also sells an 8 piece Stanley 15 degree offset set with a reversable ratchet (on and off lever) for $59

All-in-all, the Gearwrench set from Sears seems to offer the best value right now.

I just picked-up a "Gearwrench" set of metric gearwrenches. These are pretty cool! They seem to be rugged, but I was amazed at how light they are. I paid too much since I bought them at Napa ($69), but I'm happy to have 'em.

They are very useful for getting to the bolts holding the ground straps to the back of the heads (also harness brackets).

I believe both of those brand toolboxs are built by Waterloo.

Caftsman boxes are made by Waterloo.

Gearwrenches are pimp, but my flex head gearwrenchs are Super Pimp. And if you get the fancy adapters, you now have the superthin head, flexible 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drive ratchets.

Don't but the Gearwrench brand, get the Craftsman. The Gearwrench brands handle is too thin and cuts into your hand when you are trying to tighten a bolt or nut. The Craftsman is thicker in the handle and feels better.

craftsman makes two different types of gear wrenches. They have the bulky, cheap ones that look like two pieces of sheet metal held together with pins and you can see the gears. They also have the thinner, polished, badass set (which I have). The craftsman brand gear wrenches have more "clicks" per rotation than the GearWrench brand, so you can get more turns in with limited space.

These gear wrenches are my most used tools. I love them and they work much better than ratchets in most cases.

That wrench is offset and can be reversed using the small black lever switch. Most wrenches do not have the offset and you just turn the wrench around for "on Vs. off" wrenching....
